Introduction

SLIIT is a premier higher education institute recognized by the University Grants Commission – Sri Lanka, the apex body of the Country’s university system. Our academic programmes cater to BSc Degrees as well as Post Graduate Diplomas in the fields of Computing, Business and Engineering. We take pride in the fact that SLIIT produces high quality graduates with exceptional levels of employability. In 2008 the Institute was admitted as a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK and in 2013, as a member of the International Association of Universities (IAU) respectively. The Bachelor's deg The Bachelor's degree programmes at SLIIT offer many academic pathways. Students while studying towards the degree can also earn other qualifications such as Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas which are designed to meet industry requirements. Although the majority of our students complete their degrees at SLIIT, those who wish to do so have the option of transferring to any of the SLIIT overseas partner universities after completing two or two and a half years' of study to graduate from one of our partner universities in Australia, United Kingdom, United States and Canada. We place great emphasis on the quality of our education. In addition to recruiting and retaining highly qualified and experienced academic staff, we continuously enhance our teaching learning environment and improve the curricula to ensure high standards of our academic programmes. We also offer a number of programmes designed to develop the soft skills of our students and conduct industry certified professional development programmes in collaboration with Microsoft, IBM, and CISCO systems. The Institute’s enrollment has been rising steadily and currently SLIIT has over 7000 students following its undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Among our students we have students from other countries in the Asian and African regions. This has further enriched the cultural experience of studying at SLIIT.

The International Office at SLIIT values the significance of an increasingly interconnected world. As such, we bring international perspectives to the SLIIT community with “Internationalisation” to raise global awareness and to create an environment that is international in character in teaching, research and outreach. Towards Internationalization, a host of developments are already in use. Visiting scholars, international collaborations, faculty international expertise and research and enrolment of international students, exposure to knowledge about and from different parts of the world, preparation for communication and work with people from other cultures and countries, are some such developments. We enjoy partnerships with many leading universities around the globe and they provide opportunities for students to gain meaningful access to the business practices and networks of other countries. SLIIT is the premier degree awarding institute approved by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act. The Institute is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and International Association of Universities (IAU). We offer Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Computing, Business and Engineering. To achieve these objectives SLIIT conducts programmes of studies leading to BSc, BEng and BBA Degrees, BSc and BBA Special Honours Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, MSc Degrees, and several continuing Professional Development programmes in niche areas in IT, Business Management and Engineering. The SLIIT research centre is established to foster and promote research among the academic staff and students. SLIIT has also established a Software Engineering Services Division to undertake software and consultancy services and the Sri Lanka Technology Incubator to undertake and promote research and development. The Degree progammes of the Institute are designed in such a manner that a student can receive an Associate Diploma, a Diploma, and an Advanced Diploma / Bachelor Degree while continuing studies towards the BSc / BBA / BEng Special Honours Degree. Students can also choose alternative pathways to graduate from a partner university of SLIIT after successfully completing the Diploma. Candidates who exit these programmes at different levels for employment or for any other reason may rejoin the respective programme at appropriate levels for final graduation. Our graduates are globally accepted in view of the high standards maintained. SLIIT has created a learning and research environment with optimum resources for students. While encouraging students to be innovative and committed towards excellence, SLIIT aims at producing graduates with strong analytical, problem solving and communication skills.

Mechanical Engineering includes the science and art of formulation, design, development and control of systems and components involving around thermodynamics, mechanics, fluid mechanics, mechanisms, manufacturing and energy. The Mechanical Engineering major has adopted a set of educational objectives that frame the undergraduate curriculum The first two years are primarily concerned with developing basic scientific, mathematical and practical skills. The third year includes applied Engineering units in Thermal Engineering, Materials, Automatic Control, Mechanical Design & Engineering Management. In the final year the students should complete the compulsory Mechanical Engineering Project and they can broaden their knowledge by following the elective subjects, The course includes project work based on laboratory, library and field work and partial assessment completed through seminars. The students are expected to undergo six months’ on the job training with in a scheduled period prior to completion of the degree programme. Mechanical Engineering graduates can find employment in companies ranging from large multi-nationals to small, local firms. Job functions and responsibilities range from product and production design Engineering and systems design to power plant operations, quality control and project management. With experience and further education, some Mechanical Engineers move in to management positions that build up on their scientific and technical skills and expertise. Civil & Construction Engineering involves the application of basic scientific and technological principles to the design and construction of facilities necessary for the welfare of the community. The effective practice of civil engineering demands a strong background in the mathematical and physical sciences, and understanding of the properties of construction materials such as concrete, steel, timber and soils. Also needed is the skill to apply this knowledge to produce design for projects and an understanding of construction methods. The first two years are primarily concerned with developing basic scientific, mathematical and practical skills. The third year includes applied engineering units in structural analysis and design, materials, geotechnical engineering, construction engineering, hydraulics and professional practice. The final year covers subjects relating to construction management, industrial relations, contract law, cost estimation and finance.
