Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) School of Business and Management The B.Com programme has been designed to produce graduates to work in the areas of management, finance, accountancy, marketing, banking, consultancy, administration and related fields. It also has a strong foundation for continued career growth. The programme is structured to reflect the changing world of business and provide a firm foundation for the world of work both in the domestic and global scene. The programme is also intended to provide students with a professional foundation tailored to policy formulation and practice in Business. Ethical principles and general studies have been adequately considered in the design of the programme. From the third year, candidates shall specialize in one of the following disciplines: Accounting; Finance; Marketing or Human Resource Management. Specific Entry Requirements In addition to the general admission requirements into PIU, applicants must have a minimum of KCSE C (C plain) in both Mathematics and English or Kiswahili or the equivalent. Mature Entry Mature entry may be allowed for applicants who shall have attained the age of thirty five (35) years or above at the date of admission. In addition, the applicants must show evidence of at least three (3) years business, or related experience and must have obtained a mean grade of C in KCSE. Credit Transfer Candidates who join the programme with a CHE validated diploma and with a distinction or credit pass in the relevant units shall qualify for credit transfers. Candidates who join the programme with a relevant Higher National Diploma shall also qualify for credit transfers. Candidates with the relevant professional certificates may also transfer credits. The maximum number of course units to be given credit transfer shall not exceed fifty percent (50%) of the total required course units for the programme. Credit transfers and exemptions shall only be granted in the first and second year of study. No exemptions shall be granted in the subsequent years of study. A student registered in another public or accredited private university may be allowed to transfer credits into the programme. Credits shall only be transferred after the PIU Senate receives and scrutinises certified copies of the syllabi and written approval. The PIU Senate may at its discretion seek additional information from the institution concerned at the applicant’s cost. Bachelor of Science in Information Technology(BSC-IT) School of Science & ICT The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is an academic and research program which includes elements of computer science, software engineering, computer system engineering, network engineering, information security, e-commerce, and information systems. This combination of disciplines provides an education designed to produce IT graduates who are competent to address a range of applications which require knowledge of modern computer technologies, software and information systems, business processing, and also to have a rewarding life and not simply find a job in the current market, by having an education in humanities to function properly in the society they live in. This curriculum is designed to produce graduates ready to function in information systems positions with the competencies, skills, and attitudes necessary for success in the workplace. It also forms the basis for continued career growth, life-long learning as an IT professional, and to undertake future graduate programs. The curriculum objectives and competencies have been benchmarked against the guidelines for undergraduate IS/IT curricula set forth by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the Association for Information Systems (AIS), and the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), and from the employer survey of major industry players in IT in Kenya. The curriculum has also taken into account what the students are expected to achieve by considering requirements in basic mathematics and basic sciences so as to be able to analyze and configure IT related objects and systems containing hardware, software and business components. The inputs to the curriculum have also been drawn from curricula of several local universities and all over the world as well as organizations with experience in the use of IT in media, industries, and in education and training. Must have a pass in Diploma in Management and Information Technology, or Diploma in Information Technology, or Diploma in Computer technology from a recognized Institution. Any other equivalent qualifications approved by PIU University.
