Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong THEi

Introduction

Our Approach

We offer degree programmes with a difference. They are innovative as they are in niche areas, combining areas of study not often found in Hong Kong but much needed by it. They are vocationally oriented, developed with significant industry input and meaningful industrial attachments. In addition, our ‘learn and do’ approach encourages students to apply specialised knowledge and skills to real-world issues. Thus, our graduates will have the analytical and hands-on skills which are highly valued by industry and society alike.

On top of this, our unique and integrated general education programme instils in students a great curiosity about life and the world beyond their disciplinary study. In the process, they become aware of their capacity and responsibility to contribute to society, guided by personal and social values that are appropriate for the times.

We have the time to do all this because we are a predominantly teaching institution. But our teaching is enriched by the applied research and consultancy staff members do to provide solutions to pressing problems of the modern world.

In short, we offer degree programmes for the real world, degree programmes that work for society and for you.

DI

President's Message

Welcome to THEi.

We are a new institution and adopt a fresh approach to tertiary education, one that is not constrained by tired old traditions and practices.

The ‘i’ in our name and logo signifies this approach, which is to offer education that is innovative in that it contains programmes and elements not available elsewhere, and impactful in that it has a very strong relevance for society. And we treat students as individuals, seeing them as partners in a learning process, not numbers that make up enrolment targets.

We seek help from industry and academia in coming up with the degree programmes. The result is an education that has a fine balance of theory and practice, and analytical and hands-on skills: one that produces mastery in doing but guided by conceptualisation.

The programmes have gone through the accreditation process of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications. The staff members who teach them have real-life work experience and skills, which will be enhanced by their conduct of applied research and consultancy work.

We are a member institution of the Vocational Training Council and will carry on its great tradition of offering programmes that are vocational in nature and developed with a great deal of help from industry. We will therefore be producing graduates whose knowledge, skills and attitudes are valued by employers and society alike, and who will thus enjoy high employment rates.

I look forward to seeing you at THEi.
