The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Centre for China Studies

Introduction

The Centre for China Studies – formerly the Centre for East Asian Studies – is committed to teaching and research in Chinese Studies.

Our degree programmes – all conducted in English – aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to pursue successful international careers involving China. From our undergraduate BA/BSSc in Contemporary China Studies programme to our graduate MA, MPhil, and PhD programmes in Chinese Studies, we are committed to hands-on teaching and learning about China. The Chinese University Library and the University Services Centre hold an extensive collection of ancient and modern Chinese scholarship, and count among the best libraries in the world for China Studies. In addition, the Chinese art collection maintained by the Institute of Chinese Studies provides students with up-close contact with historical artifacts and artwork, using the China of yesterday to illuminate the China of today.

We believe that our location in Hong Kong provides the ideal environment in which to pursue Chinese scholarship. Hong Kong is a vibrant world city where global cultures meet, mix, and mesh. In Hong Kong, traditional Chinese culture comes alive in a contemporary Chinese metropolis.

In addition, Hong Kong is the gateway to greater China: Shenzhen – one of the mainland China’s first cities to welcome world investment – is a short 20-minute train ride from our campus.

You will discover many exciting opportunities to learn about China with us at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. We hope to see you on campus soon!

This multidisciplinary and inter-faculty programme taught in English aims to engage students to think complexly about China’s history, culture, society, economic and political situation and its place in a globalised world. Features 1. Non-Chinese Speaking-Students Welcome The Programme is taught in English; no knowledge of Chinese is required for admission. However, students are still required to meet the admission requirements as stipulated by the University. CUHK’s unique bilingual education provides an ideal environment for students to learn about China without prior knowledge of Chinese language. 2. Mastery of Chinese Language Students with no prior knowledge of Chinese language will be provided with intensive training in Chinese language. 3. Two Streams in One Programme Students will choose one of two programme streams: a Humanities stream which leads to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree or a Social Science stream which leads to a Bachelor of Social Science (BSSc) degree. Within each stream, students will develop specialisations in one of the four concentrations: Culture and Society, Language and Culture, Society and Politics, or Economics and Development. 4. Exchange Studies Students will take part in a semester-long exchange at an institution in mainland China or Taiwan. 5. Summer Fieldwork Students will experience firsthand Chinese culture and society in a summer session field study course. Scholarships A number of scholarships funded by the Hong Kong Government and private donations are available for international students commencing full-time undergraduate studies at CUHK in September 2016. The value of the scholarships varies from HK$50,000 to HK$125,000 per year. Some awards are renewable on an annual basis and tenable for up to the duration of undergraduate studies undertaken by the awardees at CUHK, subject to continued satisfactory academic performance and demonstrable financial need. All international applicants are automatically considered for scholarships once formal admission offers have been given. No separate application is required. [-]
