Introduction

Welcome to OAMK

Oulu UAS (OAMK) educates genuine and competent professionals for the needs of working life. Our Bachelor's degree programmes are on EQF (European Quality Framework and Other Learning) level 6 and our Master's degree programmes on level 7.

We have approximately 8,000 students and 640 staff. We operate in Oulu, Oulainen and Raahe. In addition, we have project-type activities in several municipalities around Northern Finland. Our operations are government funded, and audited by the Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC).

We implement northern region development objectives in the following focus areas:

  • Energy, natural resources and the environment

Studying at OAMK

We have a total of 28 Bachelor's degree programmes, of which three are taught in English. The degree programmes give you the skills and knowledge you need to work as a professional expert, to follow and promote the latest development trends of your area of expertise and to set up up for life-long learning.

Internationalisation of OAMK

Internationalisation is one of the key development targets of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. Oulu UAS develops itself and new professional know-how in co-operation with domestic and international education and research communities. Our vision is that Oulu UAS is versatilely utilising all aspects of internationalisation, actively operating in international co-operation networks and an evolving higher education institution.

Just a quick one hour flight north from the capital city of Helsinki, Oulu is the biggest city in Northern Finland and Northern Scandinavia. Oulu’s population is one of Europe’s youngest. Over one third of the residents are under 25. Oulu is also known for it’s technology, but also it's vivid and versatile cultural life. At the same time nature is closeby and easy to reach.

Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology (BEng) The principal aim of the Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology (BEng) programme is to provide students with good skills in programming. A graduate is able to design and program Internet services and applications for pc, linux and mobile environments. Students have essential web development skills related to current Internet technologies and protocols, web graphics and multimedia, web authoring and design and web programming. Courses cover the major server frameworks, databases and associated development environments. They also include client side technologies together with user experience competence. Technical expertise focuses on the technology, applications, and future trends of Internet service development. Students learn to document their work and to manage in different communicative and interactive situations and apply international knowledge and competences in their own field. Foreigners learn basics of the Finnish language. Studies in mathematics and physics support the usage of multimedia tools. Software development skills and business knowledge are gained in real life projects in companies. Professional studies consist mainly of software development, web-technologies, user experience and business studies. This programme encompasses the major frameworks and software architectures on the Internet today. Course work provides comprehensive training for professional working on e-commerce, enterprise applications, and interactive websites. First the students get a basic knowledge of programming, databases, teamwork and communication. Then they are able to participate in a software project. Later they are able to study advanced programming and deepen their knowledge in server programming, mobile application features, different mobile systems, development environments, and mobile technologies. The students also learn about game development, design and tools. The students are able to work as members of a software development team, as designers, programmers and managers. Student Testimonial Career Outlook Graduates start their career in computing industry or set up their own businesses. They will find employment in companies of all sizes. Typically, they will have one of the following job titles as they start work: web developer/programmer/designer, web application developer or GUI designer. The practical teaching consists of lessons, workshops, project works, assignments,presentations, remote studies and company visits. Students learn mainly by doing. Practically oriented teaching methods and facilities corresponding to those of industry enable students to find and apply information as well as get them skilled at using professional tools and equipment. There are three large projects in the curriculum. Subjects for the projects are given by the enterprises in Oulu and Raahe region and can include tasks like e.g. software design, implementation and testing. These projects together with the practical training and the thesis give a possibility to work in a company for more than a year during the studies. This path is a good start to the professional career. Through project-based learning students can improve their problem-solving, research, and social skills. The evaluation is based on written exams, project and assignment reports, and workshop presentations. Multiculturalism and English as a working language are adopted on our international campus. Students can also study abroad at the partner universities and include completed studies in the degree. The degree programme in Information Techonology gives you versatile career possibilities. After graduating students will have diverse knowledge and skills to act in software designing, product developing and as an expert in the field of information industry. Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business (BBA) The Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business (BBA) programme in International Business has been designed to meet the requirements of internationally oriented small and medium sized enterprises. It is intended for both Finnish and international students wishing to seek employment in international trade and marketing. The programme takes 3.5 years to complete. The extent of the degree is 210 ECTS cr. The programme consists of 60 ECTS cr of basic studies, 90 ECTS cr of professional studies, 30 ECTS cr of practical training, 15 ECTS cr of free-choice studies and 15 ECTS cr of a Bachelor's thesis. The programme leads to the Degree of a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA, in Finnish Tradenomi). Studies include courses in marketing, international business, negotiation skills, management, SAP, languages and computing. Practical training is carried out during the autumn term of the third year either in Finland or abroad. After graduation students typically work in international marketing and sales, international co-operation, logistics and controlling. The programme emphasises interaction within a multicultural group and it comprises of lectures, discussions, group works, presentations, projects, case studies and working-life co-operation. Students have access to up-to-date computer facilities. Many of the courses are delivered in co-operation with visiting lecturers from foreign partner universities. Students are encouraged to complete a part of their degree, including practical training, in partner institutions in Europe, Asia and the USA. The special needs of a student can be taken into consideration in the student's personal study plan. Students can apply to a Double Degree Programme at a partner university either in the United States or Germany.
