Its graduates include many influential filmmakers and scriptwriters, many of whom are known internationally as Oscar winners and laureates of international film festivals. | The Department of Photography was founded in 1975 which makes it one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Europe. The school is located right in the historical centre of Prague. Our unique specialization is the interconnection of classical photography techniques with contemporary multi-media trends. STUDY | The BA Photography program is open to students without academic background in photography. LECTURES, WORKSHOPS | At the Department of Photography we put an emphasis on individual development of the artists. The study includes art and photography history courses, philosophical seminars, practical seminars and workshops with renowned artists. Students also gain experience in the graphical workshop and silk screen print studio. They also learn the art of bookbinding and production of photographic publications. Multimedia instruction is an integral part of our teaching. CULTURE LIFE | An integral part of the school character is the interconnection with the dynamic cultural life in Prague. The school has its own gallery in the centre of Prague. The gallery has a rich program of student exhibitions. We assist international students in the integration into the regular gallery activities in Prague, which means they often participate in exhibitions in renowned galleries. | A unique benefit is our interconnection with the FAMU film department in areas such as direction, camera and editing. Together with our students, we regularly participate in important European festivals of photography. Within the scope of our programs we cooperate with photography and film schools all over the world. FACILITIES | Studio Tabletop is equipped with Sinar type large-format cameras with a film format of up to 18 x 24 cm, including digital alternatives. | Studio for life photography has a flash lighting system with above standard power of 12 000 Ws; it has a Hasselblad camera with a digital back, and an analogue camera Mamiya RB 67 with a set of interchangeable lenses. | Studio Portrait and Figure offers similar equipment as above and the possibility to create an endless background. |Computer room and a room for scanning films (negatives and positives) are available in the school. For more demanding work there is the scanner Hasselblad Flextight x5. | The out of Prague studio in Beroun enables students to focus on their work for several days, providing on-site accommodation facilities. It offers studios equipped for large and medium formats and two darkrooms. We are also preparing a classical studio with daylight, which will have an 18 x 24 cm camera. Is a photograph your favourite means of expression? Would you like to develop and perfect your work? The Department of Photography at FAMU offers students a parallel bachelor program in the English language. The study is structured in a way that in the first two years of the bachelor program the students are introduced to all basic forms of photography subjects – both practical and theoretical. During the school year the students execute several comprehensive art projects under the leadership of their mentors. During the third year, the knowledge acquired is perfected and the students get ready for the bachelor exam, which consists of a practical, as well as a theoretical part. The program also focuses on preparing students for MA studies in photographic or visual art disciplines. The Bachelor program lasts 3 years (6 semesters). The prerequisites for being accepted in the program include: interest in photography, talent demonstrated in an enclosed portfolio, the will to work on personal development,interest in and overview of the current cultural scene, as well as art history. Eligibility: Minimum 18 years of age, with completed secondary school education. TO APPLY, THE PROSPECTIVE STUDENT NEEDS TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS AND WORKS: 1/ THE APPLICATION FORM must be submitted to the FAMU Student Studies Office by April 1st 2016. Each part of your portfolio has to be packed in a separate envelope and labelled with the letters A, B, C or D and the number code corresponding to your application, in the following way: A – Set of creative photographs + eight-digit number code Consists of 8–12 black and white or coloured photographs of a maximum format 50 x 60 cm. The collection represents the applicant’s focus, indicates his/her orientation and existing artistic peak. B – Genre collection + eight-digit number code Any number of photographs with a maximum of 20 and maximum format 50 x 60 cm. The photographs have to be in one of the following genres: portrait, nude, scenery, city, still life, or document. C – Dummy publication + eight-digit number code A dummy publication is a photographic illustration of a book, a photograph book, a diary with a distinctive visual component, etc. It can be processed in any way with individual graphical, possibly also typographical arrangement. D – Still life + eight-digit number code A technical photography of a still life – 1 black and white photography of 30x40 cm format, which primarily illustrates technical ability. It should be a photography of an arranged still life of random objects in the daily or artificial light. The final results of the first round (ranking and a shortlist of applicants) are calculated by adding up the independent scores given by individual members of the Commission. The detailed rules are approved by the Commission prior to the Admission Procedure. NOTIFICATION OF THE RESULTS | Applicants will be notified of the 1st round results by email. 2ND ROUND The second round will take place in April 2016. Date to be announced in the end of April. Applicants who pass the 1st round will be notified of the exact schedule of the 2nd round in advance by email. The 2nd round will last 1 day. 2nd round consists of an INTERVIEW with the Admission Commission within which the applicants will explain the work submitted in the 1st round and present their motivation to study photography. METHOD OF EVALUATION | The second round will be evaluated by a Commission consisting of at least 5 teachers of the Department of Photography. The final ranking of applicants and the number of admitted applicants will be determined by adding up the scores of individual members of the Commission from the 1st and 2nd rounds.
