Students quickly begin to develop a deeper level of understanding of the processes, design and performance qualities of great animation. Concepts in acting, gesture, 2D and 3D form are also explored from the traditional to the digital, and from the roughly conceptual to the polished and professional. Students are also introduced to the visual language of filmmaking and explore the magic of effects and systems such as motion capture, one of the techniques used in some of the most recent blockbuster films. The 3D Animation unit delves deeper into the acting and storytelling aspects of the art. Students are required to develop their own interpretation on assigned themes, bringing their characters to life with emotion and personality. Material developed in class is included in the students’ professional show reel. In the final stage of study, further sophisticated skill areas are explored, including character rigging and motion (or performance) capture. This leads into a final project, which begins with an intensive pre-production subject where students form teams to generate ideas and workshop the design process together. Under the supervision of their lecturers, students go into full studio production mode.
