These microprocessors can range from the smallest chip found in greeting cards to the dual core/hyperthreaded/massively parallel processors found in the world’s most sophisticated computers. There are as many microprocessors as there are people on Earth and they are found everywhere – microwave ovens, washing machines, hubs and routers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and some cars may have several of them performing various tasks at once. Students that enjoy building, constructing and designing, and are interested in addressing environmental issues tend to enjoy this program. What opportunities are available for graduates? Civil engineering graduates pursue careers that engage them in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of bridges, buildings, foundations, dams, sanitary and solid waste disposal systems, highways, airport facilities, transportation systems, waterways, hydroelectric installations, pipelines, coal preparation and loading facilities, among others. Our program offers an excellent balance of analytical and applied coursework with an emphasis on practice-oriented lab experience. Design and laboratory experience are integrated throughout the program of study. Labs are equipped with traditional and modern computer-linked test equipment that prepare our graduates to effectively face the challenges of contemporary industry. The program requires 134 semester hours of rigorous academic work for graduation. Students take a series of sequential courses in several areas and develop skills necessary to be successful mechanical engineers. The department also provides a path for a 2+2 aerospace engineering degree from WVU that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. Under this arrangement, a student interested in a BSAE degree from WVU, can start as a freshman at WVU Tech in mechanical engineering and complete the appropriate courses in four semesters before moving on to WVU. What co-op opportunities or internships are available? Hands-on experience comes in the form of the co-op program, internships and on-campus work study jobs. Engineers are builders and need to develop strong analytical and design skills. Our curriculum is structured so that meaningful design experience is included in several of the required and elective courses. Mechanical engineering students develop these skills systematically by successfully completing a series of sequential courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, dynamics of machinery, machine design and mechanical engineering systems design. Open-ended problems and multiple-solution design concepts are incorporated across the curriculum involving design assignments in thermal and mechanical systems. Baccalaureate in Natural Resource Management The Department of Land Resources prides itself on its hands-on approach to learning. Students are provided experiences that duplicate real world applications as closely as possible. Housed in the Land plenty Center within the Waco Center, the Department has state-of-the-art facilities and about 300 acres of land adjacent to the building for outdoor projects. A greenhouse and sawmill are located on the property for student use along with storage buildings for timber harvesting equipment. A computer lab is available for the appropriate classes. The lab contains computers, plotters, a scanner, and software that replicate those used in government, business, and industry offices. A wide array of hand tools, large equipment, and instruments suitable for field labs are available to enhance instruction and learning. Global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS) technologies are used in several classes. The Forest Technology Program has been recognized by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) since 1971. In 2009, SAF began the transition from recognition to full accreditation of forest technology degree programs. The program is currently a candidate for accreditation. There are only 22 accredited programs in the country. Graduates can become registered under state law to practice forest management in West Virginia. Graduates of the Land Surveying associate degree program receive a surveyor intern status as the curriculum is approved by the West Virginia Board of Examiners of Land Surveyors and the degree provides two of the six years required for licensure. The associate degree programs, like the baccalaureate program, have active advisory committees comprised of representatives from government, business, and industry. These advisory bodies ensure that classes are continually updated and meet the needs of industry and government. Job opportunities remain strong for graduates of the three degree programs. [-]

Forensic science programs of variable quality are appearing at many institutions. How do you decide which is right for you? Why should you consider WVU? It is an individual decision based on many factors, but some things you should know about WVU... Accredited programs such as ours have to meet rigorous standards in our classes, structure, facilities, and faculty qualifications. A degree from an accredited institution carries significant weight in the forensic science community and that will become increasingly important as the number of forensic science graduates enter the job market. Our program is approaching the decade-old mark and was one of the first accredited programs in the nation. We employ full-time faculty with real forensic experience, professors whose one and only job is to pass their knowledge and experience to the next generation of forensic leaders. All of our students complete a rigorous, 420-hour summer internships at locations such as the United States Secret Service, state and local police agencies and labs, and forensic laboratories nationwide. Working with students, we organize the internships, check on progress, and insure that the experience helps you mature from a student to a forensic professional. Many students obtain their first job as a a result of their internship, either directly or indirectly. Upon graduation from the Forensic and Investigative Science Program, students will be able to: Take data generated during a forensic investigation and prepare for trial. The petroleum and natural gas engineer must know and be capable of applying both conventional engineering design principles as well as those pertaining specifically to the field of petroleum and natural gas engineering. These are developed in the petroleum and natural gas engineering courses in the curriculum. Because many engineers will be employed as supervisors or executives, managerial and social skills are also emphasized.
