Top Distance learning Bachelors in USA. The BSW program is premised on a generalist model. This means students who receive a BSW from the University of Montana have the ability to view social problems and human development from broad ecological, strengths-based, and diversity perspectives. This necessitates that a generalist possess the ability to synthesize knowledge from a variety of fields to intervene at multiple levels applying a broad array of theoretical and practice knowledge. To that end, the BSW program is embedded within a liberal arts education. Students must fulfill general education requirements held by the University of Montana. We also ask our students to complete a number of extra-departmental requirements including courses in biology, psychology, economics, American government, and race and oppression prior to taking upper division courses (300-level and above). Students also complete upper division electives in the disciplines of their choice to support their social work knowledge and interests. This enables our students to bring to their social work careers a rich knowledge base from a wide array of academic traditions. Curriculum The BSW Program requires that students take 40 credits of required social work courses. In addition to social work courses students are required to take eight extra-departmental courses, nine credits of upper division electives and all general education courses as required by the University of Montana. A course of study for social work majors, including social work classes, extra-departmental requirements, and general education courses, can be found in the University of Montana Catalog under the School of Social Work section. Students work with their Academic Advisor in planning their course of study, and may also enroll in a number of social work electives. All of our social work course requirements are based on Student Learning Outcomes and Program Goals shaped by the Council of Social Work Education Educational and Accreditation Standards. BSW Practicum Overview Bachelor-level students majoring in social work must complete a supervised practicum of 450 hours. Practicum (SW 495, Field Work Practicum) is taken over two consecutive semesters for a total of 10 credits (five credits per semester). The evaluation score from the supervised practicum determines the student grade for the practicum experience. Practicum offers students opportunities to: Integrate classroom experience with social work practice Develop professional self awareness and accountability Practice social work skills and theories Exercise ethical decision making in the context of social work values and the NASWCode of Ethics The practicum experience is a vital part of social work education, and requires careful preparation and planning. Students will be in an agency setting for approximately 15 hours per week for two consecutive semesters supervised by an Agency Field Instructor who will serve as teacher, mentor, and supervisor. Students are also assigned a Faculty Supervisor, who will serve as the School of Social Work liaison between the student and the agency. The Faculty Supervisor will meet with both the student and the Agency Field Instructor at the beginning of the first semester to discuss learning goals and objectives. The Faculty Supervisor will also meet with the student and the Agency Field Instructor at the end of each semester to conduct the student performance evaluation.
