Fieldwork projects will be developed in consultation with the corresponding faculty member. First-Time Students In addition to VERITAS standard admission requirements, the Bachelors in Sustainability Studies also requires the following from High school first-time applicants: A minimum high school cumulative grade of 80% or a 3.0 GPA. A high intermediate level of written and oral usage of English and Spanish. Transfer Students wishing to transfer from another institution must comply with the same GPA and language requirement as First-Time Students. Students transferring from other institutions may transfer up to 9 credit hours if transfer course contents have a minimum of a 75% equivalency to Veritas courses. Bachelors Requirements A minimum of 144 semester credit hours are required for graduation. Students may also take at least 2 elective courses from the Center for international Programs or from the other programs at Veritas for intersection purposes. For transfer students: No more than 12 semester hours may be earned by comprehensive examination for the bachelor’s degree in finance, statistics or math courses. Students wishing to participate in the dual degree program with Western Illinois University must complete a minimum of 60 semester hours of VERITAS resident-credit courses and a minimum of 30 semester hours of WIU resident-credit courses to graduate in the bachelor’s degree. 30 online courses may be taken from WIU online catalog to fulfill the rest of the credits. First-Year English writing Completion of the two composition courses is required before advancing to track courses. Students from non-English-speaking countries must receive a minimum of a 75% in the English composition of the course. Two languages The School of Sustainability requires all students to have a high intermediate command of both written and oral Spanish and English languages. A good management of English and Spanish is required due to Latin America being a key regional partner in relation to natural resource management, trade agreements, and inter-institutional relations and cooperation. Therefore a good command of both languages will enable the student to study adequately within this context and develop a good understanding of these sectors. In addition, many of the present and pertinent climate change issues are dependent on the conservation of resources in Latin America and English is the international language used in many of the global events and international platforms discussing them. Students must demonstrate “proficiency” in a second language at a high intermediate level. Students can submit approval of a second Language requirement by: Completion of their second language course work at the high intermediate level (202 or equivalent; those students completing this requirement Spanish or English). A second language course at the 300-level or higher taught in the second language and having 202 or its equivalent as a prerequisite. Students are provided experiences that duplicate real world applications as closely as possible. Housed in the Land plenty Center within the Waco Center, the Department has state-of-the-art facilities and about 300 acres of land adjacent to the building for outdoor projects. A greenhouse and sawmill are located on the property for student use along with storage buildings for timber harvesting equipment. A computer lab is available for the appropriate classes. Students receive instruction on ecosystem function, environmental assessment, geospatial analysis, and management. Further, the Program integrates course offerings from the Department of Science and Mathematics, Department of Business, and Department of Social Science. The degree encompasses general education, a Natural Resource Management core, seven major concentration areas and a block elective component. The seven degree concentrations are Applied Science, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Environmental Science, Forest Technology, Landman Technology, and Land Surveying Technology. Two associate degree programs are offered, Forest Technology and Land Surveying Technology. Students completing these associate degree programs can matriculate seamlessly into the Natural Resource Management degree program. The Forest Technology Program has been recognized by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) since 1971. In 2009, SAF began the transition from recognition to full accreditation of forest technology degree programs. The program is currently a candidate for accreditation. There are only 22 accredited programs in the country. Graduates can become registered under state law to practice forest management in West Virginia.
