Core practical and theoretical skills for the professional musician. The first two years of the degree revolve around each student’s?Primary Study (or principle instrument), which includes 4 hours of weekly instruction: 1 hour individual instruction, 1 hour group instruction, and 2 hours of ensemble instruction. Parallel to this intensive study on their primary instruments, our students receive professional training in keyboard and aural skills, harmony and theory, music history, and choral singing. 2. A specialized qualification in a particular area of music. During their final two years of study, our students must complete seven courses in one of the four following concentrations: a. Classical Performance: this consists of two more years of Advanced Primary Study, as well as courses in performance practice, analysis, and composition. b. Jazz Performance: this also consists of two more years of Advanced Primary Study, along with courses in applied jazz harmony, improvisation, and jazz composition.? c. Music Education: students in this course gain practical and theoretical knowledge of various methodologies for teaching music to children, including actual teaching experience in local schools. d. Creative Music Technology: this concentration trains students to compose and create new musical works with the aid of the latest advances in computers and music technology. 3. Flexibility to develop one’s individual interests and talents. The theory that you study is applied to real playing situations, and in general classes are focussed on making you ready to play jazz on the highest professional level. Piano study, lessons in arranging and compositions all find quick applications in studio projects and student performances. Programme outline You start performing publicly from day one. The emphasis is on theory, although this relates to how you can apply this during performances. You will also learn to play the piano in order to understand the theory. Many choose for a combination between playing chamber music, instrumental teaching at a music school or setting up a private teaching practice. Occasionally a student becomes a soloist on the international stage. Performing as a musician means you are sometimes away on tour and frequently need to deliver a top performance at night and on weekends whilst others are relaxing. In every case, wherever you may later end up, at the Prince Claus Conservatoire you will be trained to become a versatile, well rounded musician of a high level. Every semester, the student may not sign up in more than 30 credits, respecting the precedence when these have been set. At the beginning of each semester, students will be advised of the curricular units to carry out in order to appropriate them to their academic career. The undergraduate students can still benefit from the different mobility programmes in which FCSH/NOVA participates as Erasmus +, Almeida Garrett exchange programmes, among others, and participate in research within the research units of the Faculty.
