This degree is designed to train students for careers in jazz, popular or commercial music performance and/or instruction. The programme aims to develop a thorough understanding of jazz and popular music, and its relationship to contemporary Jamaican and Caribbean societies. Principal instrument, improvisation, jazz harmony and arranging, jazz and Jamaican music history, as well as jazz and popular ensembles are emphasized in this programme of study.
ADMISSIONS CRITERIA:Minimum FIVE (5) CXC subjects with grades 1 to 3 (grade 3 after 1998) or minimum FIVE (5) G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with grades A to C. Be at least 17 years old at the time of admission. English Language at the CXC/G.C.E. Level (or equivalent) is compulsory for all applicants. SCHOOL OF MUSIC AUDITION: Applicants are asked to perform two (2) or three (3) contrasting pieces demonstrating the ability to perform, at an advanced level, on the applicant’s principal instrument. International applicants are required to send a videotape or DVD of their performance for assessment in NTSC format. DVD must include: A verbal introduction of name and country of origin.
