Bachelor in Music Education

This degree programme prepares students for careers in music teaching at the secondary level. The philosophy of the programme is based on the principle that a person must first be a good musician in order to be a good music educator. Therefore, the programme includes substantial work in music theory, aural training, musicology, instrumental/vocal studies, ensembles, and conducting, in addition to music education methods courses and teaching practicum. Students select either an instrumental concentration or vocal concentration, or a combined program which includes a mixture of the instrumental and vocal concentrations.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA:

Minimum FIVE (5) CXC subjects with grades 1 to 3 (grade 3 after 1998) or minimum FIVE (5) G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with grades A to C. Be at least 17 years old at the time of admission. English Language at the CXC/G.C.E. Level (or equivalent) is compulsory for all applicants. SCHOOL OF MUSIC AUDITION: Applicants are asked to perform two (2) or three (3) contrasting pieces demonstrating the ability to perform, at an advanced level, on the applicant’s principal instrument. International applicants are required to send a videotape or DVD of their performance for assessment in NTSC format. DVD must include: A verbal introduction of name and country of origin. Reasons for wanting to pursue a performing arts programme at EMCVPA. Course choice (e.g. Bachelor of Fine Arts) and desired career path (e.g. teaching, performance). Applicant’s audition performance. MUSIC TESTS: Applicants to the School of Music will be required to pass an Aural Test, Sight Reading test and Music Theory Test, as well as a technical assessment specific to the applicant’s instrument. ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The programme aims to develop a thorough understanding of jazz and popular music, and its relationship to contemporary Jamaican and Caribbean societies.
