The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in acting is a pre-professional training program rooted in a strong tradition of liberal arts education. Students who intend to pursue the BFA acting degree will enter the University as BA students in Theatre and declare an intent to pursue the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting no later than the beginning of the second semester of the four-year program. Over the course of the program, students pursuing a BFA in Acting must: Take a rigorous sequence of studio training including courses in acting, movement, film acting technique, and voice and speech. Attain a cumulative 2.5 overall GPA and a 3.0 GPA in acting coursework. After a mid-program audition at the end of the second year, be invited into the BFA program. Be cast in at least three School of Theatre & Dance productions during their four years in the program. Acting is an expressive art form in which the actor is the instrument of expression. The program is concerned with developing the student’s ability to utilize the skills and tools taught over the four years to communicate a dramatic or comedic story in the context of theatrical production and film. Students are expected to make continued progress in deepening and clarifying their ability to communicate story truthfully and play a character in action. [-]

Bachelor Degree in Theatre Arts Black Hills State University Theatre is a small program with big benefits, where the artistic process is as important as the final product. The program provides a student centered learning environment focusing on cultivating the collaborative skills, creativity and professionalism necessary to pursue a career in theatre. Students will build a solid foundation from which they are prepared to attend graduate school or enter the job market. There are multiple staged productions through out the year that are open to the public. Two student organizations provide support to the theatre program: Theatre Society is open to all BHSU students Props and Liners, the oldest student organization at BHSU, is a Theatre Honorary Fraternity Career Opportunities Theater is made up of many areas of career specialization. These areas include (but are not limited to): acting, directing, scenic design, costume design, lighting design, makeup design, sound design, technical direction, stage management, and publicity. Each area of career specialization has its own set of required crafts. In addition, within each area of specialization are various trades, requiring specific sets of skills. These trades include: carpenters, scenic artists, property master, master electricians, light board operators, sound board operators, costume shop managers, tailors, deck managers and more. Each student has the opportunity to choose, and become proficient in, one area of career specialization and to acquire one or more set(s) of trade skills. This combination will enable the student to pursue career and job opportunities in community, college and professional theater. Additional opportunities are available in scenic shops, costume shops and television studios; civic centers, auditoriums and event planning organizations. [-]
