The majority of new job openings in the United States today are in small businesses, and most successful business leaders display a great deal of entrepreneurial behavior. Entrepreneurial Studies is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on the tools needed to start a new business, manage a small business, expand a family business, lead innovation efforts in a corporate environment, or become an effective manager in a fast-growing enterprise.Services are offered to both men and women, including projects that offer professional consulting and student support to assist local businesses. As part of the business core, students take upper-division business requirements, including Introduction to Marketing, Managing Organizational Behavior, Business Finance, Management Information Systems, and Operations Management. The major then begins with Principles of Entrepreneurship, and continues with upper-level courses in all of the business disciplines, including Marketing Communications, Small Business Finance, Accounting/Tax for Small Business, and Business Law. The capstone seminar in Entrepreneurship pulls it all together, giving students an opportunity to complete a professional business plan that can be implemented to start a new venture of their own creation and includes participation in a campus wide business plan competition. Each year, Entrepreneurial Studies students participate in the University of Hartford Business Plan Competition. Students from the Barney School and other colleges have faculty advisors who help them transform great ideas into viable strategies for success. This includes taking advantage of what other schools at the University of Hartford offer (e.g., Engineering, Art, Education). Such exposure provides experience and skills necessary to compete in the entrepreneurial world.
