Mission The mission of the Interior Design B.F.A. program is to is to cultivate a future professional who is a critical thinker, a creative designer, and is focused on the human element of the built environment. Curriculum & Philosophy The philosophy of the Interior Design B.F.A. program is to create exceptional interior designers. Students become exceptional when they are able to think critically and creatively. They become exceptional when they embrace failure in order to better understand success. They become exceptional when they not only know history, but also understand its significance and influence on future design. Exceptional students are capable of using a variety of tools and methods to communicate their ideas. We do not aim to produce conventional designers – we create exceptional visionaries. In our CIDA accredited program, students will develop: Critical and creative thinking in order to problem-solve Collaboration, communication, and professionalism for entrepreneurs as well as employees Empathy to create human-centered design A global perspective An understanding of historical and cultural contexts for design Theory and manipulation of space, form and color Knowledge and application of furniture, fixture, equipment and finish materials Knowledge and application of environmental and building systems, interior construction, regulations and guidelines Success To date, eight of eleven student projects that were sent to compete for scholarships awarded by the prestigious Angelo Donghia Foundation in nationwide, juried competitions have won. Some of these students received scholarship amounts up to $30,000, the maximum amount awarded. These students competed with students from Parsons, RISD, University of Cincinnati, and New York School of Design to name a few. This is one of the largest scholarships in the country awarded to interior design students attending CIDA accredited institutions. Students of our program have enjoyed internships and professional work with a variety of successful firms in areas such as Nashville, Atlanta, New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and abroad in China, Hong Kong, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and Dubai. Attrition and Retention: Of those accepted into the program in 2014-2015 academic year, 84% were retained. Graduation Rate: In 2014-2015, 100% of seniors graduated. Job Placement Rate: In 2014-2015, 20% became independent designers; 70% are employed in the field.* *Verification in process Faculty Faculty is comprised of professional designers and architects who are continually evolving and improving in order to better serve our students. Faculty development meetings are held on a regular basis so that we can collaborate on latest industry advances, teaching practices, and professional growth. All full-time faculty are members of Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), attending conferences, and bringing best practices to the classroom. Many faculty are active members of other professional organizations including ASID and IIDA. They are mentors both in the school and for the community. The department meets biannually with a Program Advisory committee comprised of professionals within the design industry and educational consultants. Travel Students will have many opportunities and are strongly encouraged to travel as a part of their educational experience in our program. Domestic markets, international travel study, and various field trips are components of our curriculum. We believe that travel not only provides fresh inspiration, but creates profound moments that impact students’ understanding of design. Laptop Requirement All students are required to have a PC laptop that will be sufficient to run the programs and software (AutoCAD, SketchUp with plug-ins, and Photoshop) that we teach and use on a regular basis. Sophomore Review Upon completion of sophomore studios, students will participate in a portfolio review of projects and creative works. Mission The Interactive Design program prepares students for careers in the interactive design industry by building essential foundational skills. The curriculum is developed around a variety of creative experiences in which students are challenged to blend concepts and design skills using time-tested design principles with current techniques and technology. We focus on the creative process–from concept-driven design to innovative solutions. Curriculum & Philosophy The Interactive Design program is a dynamic B.F.A. degree in which students gain the necessary knowledge and experience in the latest web and digital technologies to prepare them for a successful career in the interactive design industry. The curriulum combines classic design principles and current interactive technologies to challenge students to create rich interactive designs. We focus on the creative process from concept-driven design to innovative visual solutions that work across a variety of interactive and digital media. Students design logos, web advertising campaigns, websites, and apps. They also learn illustration techniques, animation, motion design, and industry business practices while receiving thorough instruction in computer systems and industry - standard software. All of this is then applied through a customized internship program that exposes our students to the industry and gives them practical, real-world experience before they graduate. Success Our success stems from three main factors: curriculum, instructors, and educational philosophy. Our graduates are in high demand and work for advertising and public relations agencies, graphic design firms, and small business doing corporate identity design, publishing, packaging, and music related marketing. Curriculum & Philosophy Fashion is a business, and graduates are ready to begin their careers with the knowledge gained in the variety of design courses, latest Adobe and Gerber technologies that are utilized in the industry, and business courses that include Entrepreneurship, Financial Management, and Apparel Manufacturing. Upon completion of the B.F.A. in Fashion Design, graduates will Demonstrate an advanced skill level of design that meets professional standards in the fashion industry and specialized markets. Travel Students have the opportunity to travel to New York and visit the Garment District, the center of fashion in the United States, and meet with industry leaders like Kay Unger, Elaine Gold, Greenfield Clothiers, Nanette Lepore, Saks, Inc., Paper Magazine, Theory and top costume shops for Broadway Theater.
