Mission The mission of the Interior Design B.F.A. program is to is to cultivate a future professional who is a critical thinker, a creative designer, and is focused on the human element of the built environment. Curriculum & Philosophy The philosophy of the Interior Design B.F.A. program is to create exceptional interior designers. Students become exceptional when they are able to think critically and creatively. They become exceptional when they embrace failure in order to better understand success. They become exceptional when they not only know history, but also understand its significance and influence on future design. Exceptional students are capable of using a variety of tools and methods to communicate their ideas. We do not aim to produce conventional designers – we create exceptional visionaries. In our CIDA accredited program, students will develop: Critical and creative thinking in order to problem-solve Collaboration, communication, and professionalism for entrepreneurs as well as employees Empathy to create human-centered design A global perspective An understanding of historical and cultural contexts for design Theory and manipulation of space, form and color Knowledge and application of furniture, fixture, equipment and finish materials Knowledge and application of environmental and building systems, interior construction, regulations and guidelines Success To date, eight of eleven student projects that were sent to compete for scholarships awarded by the prestigious Angelo Donghia Foundation in nationwide, juried competitions have won. Some of these students received scholarship amounts up to $30,000, the maximum amount awarded. These students competed with students from Parsons, RISD, University of Cincinnati, and New York School of Design to name a few. This is one of the largest scholarships in the country awarded to interior design students attending CIDA accredited institutions. Students of our program have enjoyed internships and professional work with a variety of successful firms in areas such as Nashville, Atlanta, New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and abroad in China, Hong Kong, the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, and Dubai. Attrition and Retention: Of those accepted into the program in 2014-2015 academic year, 84% were retained. Graduation Rate: In 2014-2015, 100% of seniors graduated. Job Placement Rate: In 2014-2015, 20% became independent designers; 70% are employed in the field.* *Verification in process Faculty Faculty is comprised of professional designers and architects who are continually evolving and improving in order to better serve our students. Faculty development meetings are held on a regular basis so that we can collaborate on latest industry advances, teaching practices, and professional growth. All full-time faculty are members of Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC), attending conferences, and bringing best practices to the classroom. Many faculty are active members of other professional organizations including ASID and IIDA. They are mentors both in the school and for the community. The department meets biannually with a Program Advisory committee comprised of professionals within the design industry and educational consultants. Travel Students will have many opportunities and are strongly encouraged to travel as a part of their educational experience in our program. Domestic markets, international travel study, and various field trips are components of our curriculum. We believe that travel not only provides fresh inspiration, but creates profound moments that impact students’ understanding of design. Laptop Requirement All students are required to have a PC laptop that will be sufficient to run the programs and software (AutoCAD, SketchUp with plug-ins, and Photoshop) that we teach and use on a regular basis. Sophomore Review Upon completion of sophomore studios, students will participate in a portfolio review of projects and creative works. Work will be reviewed by a jury of faculty members to prepare students for successful entry into upper-level classes. [-]
