Seminole State's Bachelor of Applied Science in Interior Design puts students on the path to licensure and a professional career in interior design. Interior designers work closely with architects, engineers and general contractors in a wide array of settings. Employment opportunities span from the familiar private practice role to corporations across many industry sectors, ranging from retail and restaurant establishments, healthcare and government facilities, commercial and residential real estate development to the many furniture and decor supply chain companies. These firms hire interior designers to create environments that not only enhance sales and customer experience, but also create a more productive and pleasing work environment. This program has an art-based curriculum that combines the concepts and philosophies of the social sciences with the technical skills required to communicate within this design profession. Students will learn design theory, architectural design, space planning, aesthetics, sustainable "green" design, materials and methods of construction, life safety and building codes, professional ethics and practices, interior finish products and materials, and both oral and visual communication. The comprehensive curriculum provides a complete educational foundation for this profession. Upon completion of the B.A.S. Interior Design degree and two years of work experience, graduates are eligible to take the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination for state licensure. As the practice of interior design becomes ever more complex and technical, it is increasingly important for designers to have a solid educational base with a pathway to licensure. Having obtained skills critical to the industry, graduates of this program will be able to work in a wide variety of design occupations. Why Seminole State? Product Design is about constantly examining the relationship between products and their users. There are all sorts of products and they are everywhere, from the purely functional to those that make a statement. Emerging new technologies are triggering debate about the foundations of existing ideas about product design, use and the product economy. The free use of new distribution and production opportunities are creating major opportunities for product designers now. At its core, product design is about questioning and redefining what already exists. This is why, as a product designer, you develop meaning and think about appearance. An important part of your course is discovering and developing materials, often new ones, and production processes by literally ‘getting your hands dirty’. You could even go one step further: to not be afraid to dismantle the existing, both in a physical and a conceptual sense as well as in terms of production and distribution. In doing so, you develop new ideas and ways of use; you dive deeply into the consequences of designing in practice. Examples are aspects such as environmental and social sustainability. As a product designer, you are thus not limited to existing instruments, but you either adapt these instruments or you design your own instruments. This goes beyond the product itself: product design is not limited to tangible things, but it can also result into a process or a service. In short, product designers are people who see themselves as experimental, research-driven, collaborative and entrepreneurial in imagining how products can change our future. In spatial design, we look at the urban environment and at indoor and outdoor spaces at small and large scale. It is a discipline in which cultural and artistic awareness, social engagement, economic responsibility and technical affinity come together creatively. You learn to deal with complex tasks and situations that society faces. You learn to develop your own vision and to translate it into concrete design practice. The method of learning is through projects which cover current themes such as repurposing of buildings, sustainability and identity. In previous years, these themes included ‘quick-visit museums’, a flagship store for a new brand, a ‘long stay hotel’ in an industrial area of Rotterdam, a multi-cultural theatre in a church in Zuidwijk (Rotterdam), and an overhaul of empty buildings in the inner city of Rotterdam. While working on design projects, you take practical classes on analysis; the application of materials; architecture; model (maquette) building techniques; draughtsmanship; software programmes; techniques for light, colour, texture; and presentation techniques; next to that you take subject related theory and history. And of course you can do an exchange abroad in for example Barcelona, Glasgow or Helsinki. After completing the course, you can work as an interior designer, assistant architect, designer of interior or exterior objects, exhibition designer or spatial designer. You could also further specialise to gain a Master Interior Architecture & Retail Design at WdKA’s Piet Zwart Institute, or at the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design.
