Bachelor in Retail Design and Management The bachelor programme in Retail Design and Management is a 3½-year full-time programme taught in English structured as an AP degree and a BA top-up. The course programme teaches you to design, furnish and manage retail stores within the fashion and lifestyle sector. You learn to manage trends and consumer behaviour, as a result you are able to assist in designing the store concept for specific target groups. You learn how to analyse a store concept and interpret the results afterwards. Also, you learn to transform knowledge into sales. The programme takes place at Campus Herning. Content and Structure During the first four semesters, the studies are joint for Retail Design and Retail Management, on the three last semesters the programme splits in two: Retail Design and Retail Management. Retail Design The Retail Design programme will qualify you to handle a com¬plex and varying range of products in the development of store concepts. You will learn about retail developments in terms of communication, materials, history, and trends. Having comple¬ted the programme, you will be able to carry out and manage the entire process from the first drafts to final solution, and you will know how the visual impression of the store is best commu¬nicated. You will learn to consider the financial basis underlying your decisions as well as the consequences that your choices have for the company and the store. Retail Management The Retail Management programme will give you solid theoreti¬cal foundations for handling the practical tasks involved in con¬cept management and development of a store portfolio. You will learn to manage a retail concept with your own and/or franchise stores and to prepare and implement campaigns. You will be able to apply contemporary management tools as regards both retail aspects, finance and human resources. You will acqui¬re skills to help you develop and motivate employees and fran¬chisees to create new stores and improve existing ones. The programme is organised so that you first participate in joint projects for all BA students and then put a profound focus on your chosen speciality. The scope of the joint projects is to give you a full insight into other areas of the design industry, and to help you develop your ability to co-operate. Elective and general subjects of the speciality should strengthen your qualifications within the area of Branding and Marketing Management. The objective is to help you develop your personal image. Through the elective subjects we offer compulsory study trips and the chance to improve your skills in your chosen subject. The placement period on the 3rd and 6th semester is a compulsory part of the programme, where you get a chance to test your skills in actual practice. Every semester is concluded with an oral or written examination and you finish your degree with a bachelor assignment. Retail Design - Career Opportunities The retail designer conveys the brand identity of the company so it reaches the customers. You will work with interior decoration of the store according to the set goals of the marketing strategy. The purpose of the retail design is to be eye-catching. It should be clear which target groups the products aim for. You will work with marketing as well as decorating stores. Bachelor in Pattern Design The bachelor programme in Pattern Design is a 3½-year full-time programme taught in English structured as an AP degree and a BA top-up. The Pattern Design programme will qualify you to work speci¬fically with the design of garments – turning ideas into something that can be realized in practice. You will be able to take responsibility for complex pattern design and grading solutions using the newest CAD technology. You will be trained to apply, compare and combine pattern construction methods and to analyse and assess the impact of grading methods on the fit and silhouette of a garment. Based on your knowledge of tech¬nical production methods, you will be able to transform the designer’s vision into a perfectly fitted garment. The programme takes place at Campus Herning. Content and Structure The Bachelor (BA) top-up takes three semesters. Whereas the AP degree programme provides you with basic insight and tools to navigate in the fashion industry, the BA top-up gives you the chance to become deeply absorbed in pattern design. At this stage of your education we expect you to be able to work in a more independent manner. The programme is organised with joint projects for all BA students during the first semester. Bachelor in Materials Science and Product Design The bachelor programme in Materials Science and Product Design is a 3½-year full-time programme taught in English, which enables you to work with materials and manufacturing processes in the fashion and furniture business. You get expert knowledge of new and innovative materials and insight into modern processing technology. Apart from that you get insight into modern processing technology, thus you can be part of optimising aspects when it comes to techniques, product design, product development process, economics, and production in manufacturing companies. The programme takes place in Herning in collaboration with the engineering training programmes at VIA and the University of Aarhus in Herning (AU Herning). Content and Structure The studies are based on theory as well as projects. Through different projects you develop your ability to collaborate as well as develop and manage projects. Our workshops and laboratory offers the opportunity to test your theoretical competences in a practical manner. During your studies you will experience a close contact with companies from the textile or furniture industry i.e. through guest lectures, company visits, a trainee period and projects. The programme stretches over seven semesters. The course structure is based on common subjects and a range of subjects based on your speciality, i.e. textile or furniture.
