A bachelor’s degree is a post-secondary degree awarded after completed 120 credits. It usually takes eight semesters to complete a Bachelor’s degree. The International Business major at Muskingum University provides students with a set of competencies necessary for success in today’s global economy by combining courses from diverse disciplines. Students learn the language and basic principles of business, accounting, and economics; acquire multicultural awareness and communication skills in a world language (English for non-native speakers); and gain an international perspective through their coursework in political science, History, and other areas. Related Areas of Study Accounting Business Economics French German International Affairs Spanish Student Opportunities Research In addition to senior seminars, which typically involve independent research under the tutelage of a professor, the department is involved in the Summer Fellows program. Recent examples of summer fellows projects include recalculating the Human Development Index to identify where education ranks as a priority for different societies, and using sophisticated techniques such as Date Envelopment Analysis to investigate the formation of strategic groups in Big Ten football. Employment Each professor usually has a student assistant to help with preparing for and operating classes as well as research. In addition, many of the professors in Economics, Accounting, and Business are involved in the First Year Program as seminar mentors, each with a student mentor earning internship credit. Study Abroad Muskingum University students have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters at a foreign university through the Muskingum or East Central Colleges (ECC) Consortium Student Exchange Programs. Professional Activities The Northeast Ohio International Business Network (NOIBN), through Muskingum International Business alum David Hurtuk ('02) of LaSalle Bank, invited Muskingum University International Business majors to attend a reception for the international business community in Cleveland last year. The reception was jointly organized by the US Export Assistance Center (USEAC), Northern Ohio District Export Council (NODEC), Cleveland Foreign Consular Corp., Ohio Department of Development (ODOD), World Trade Center, Cleveland (WTCC), and other Northeast Ohio international business organizations. Majors had the opportunity to network with representatives of the Chicago International Trade Commissioners Association, representing consulates from 32 countries and Ohio manufacturers, distributors, exporters, importers, and service providers actively involved in international trade. Six junior and senior International Business students, attended the event, accompanied by program advisor Dr. Jean Morris. The Business Management program is a fully integrated degree program which seeks to provide students both a multi-faceted foundation in the classroom and the opportunity for special off-campus internships in the business world. Students leave prepared for graduate study in economics, business or law and for immediate participation in the business community. Student Opportunities Internships Recent internships for Business students include: Resource Systems (New Concord, OH) Empower Media Marketing (Cincinnati, OH) Historic Roscoe Village (Coshocton, OH) Enterprise Rent-A-Car (Columbus, OH) Cincinnati Swarm (Professional Arena Football) The Washington Group (Cleveland, OH) Research Business majors have recently participated in the following types of research: On site observation research has been conducted through the course, “Business Tours”. Organizations visited and studied include, but are not limited to, Longaberger, Colgate Palmolive, The Wilds, and The Washington Wild Things (minor league baseball franchise). Students may work with professors on special projects as needed. For example, through the Muskie Fellows Program a former student assisted a professor with background research, formulating hypotheses, and developing an initial draft of a paper presented at a national conference. Students helped research and organize information on sports management classes and programs around the country in order to help a professor introduce and prepare for the business elective BUSI 418 (Sports Management & Marketing). This research included developing, managing, and interpreting information from two focus groups. Employment The Economics, Accounting, and Economics Department typically employs four student assistants each year. Duties include, but are not limited to, research assistance, grading assistance, case analyses, facilitating classroom preparation, management of the annual departmental awards ceremony, tutoring assistance, and general office duties. Professional Activities The Muskingum University Business Club brings in guest speakers for the campus community, travels for corporate tours, and gets involved with entrepreneurial and fundraising activities. Majors are often honored at the Columbus Chapter of FEI (Financial Executives Institute), where they attend a banquet and listen to a professional panel presentation given by financial executives.
