Professional Profile An entrepreneur in business can fulfil two main functions; the driver of new business ventures itself (entrepreneur), or the driver of innovation and change within existing business (intrapreneur). The profile only essentially differs between these two roles in the requirements of the level of ability to take risk and aptitude for taking opportunity. Both the ability to judge risk and being aware of opportunity are competencies required at both ends of this profile’s spectrum. An Entrepreneur requires the ability to lead and motivate people. This will be during business start-ups and project launches, but also in times of change and innovation implementation. The Entrepreneur will understand the need for good communication skills and have a good understanding of society, economics and sustainability. The Entrepreneur will have skills of selling ideas and products, winning commitment, and presenting and executing business plans. Understanding the need for stable and solid management within a company, large or small is important. An entrepreneurial business person in modern day Europe needs to be able to communicate with people across the continent and across the world, and requires the ability to understand the effects of national and international governments on the business ventures they are involved in. Entrepreneurs and Intrapreneurs need the ability to look at problems and risks from a holistic view point and find solutions and manage risk through innovation. They need to have a good understanding of finance and fiscal matters and be able to knowledgably communicate with people supporting them through accountancy, or human resource or information services, and be able to lead these people. Entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs are successful because they can quickly understand complex situations that require them to plan and make strategic decisions, and work on a multitude of business ideas and projects at the same time. They have a solid understanding of marketing design and implementation. Being able to develop business ideas simultaneously requires an ability to determine and understand important details, pinpoint alternatives and continuously evaluate and review business processes. A characteristic of entrepreneurs is that they have the ability to fully devote and commit themselves to achieving their long term business objectives and goals, and that this energy is also directly translated into the short term objectives. The profession - an Entrepreneur / Intrapreneur As described in the chart above, Wittenborg sees the possible professions of a graduate from the Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship in four inter-related sections, between which there is often and natural overlap: The (Serial) Entrepreneur This is seen as someone who is committed to starting businesses and companies from scratch and making them a success. The Independent Self Employed Business Person This is seen as a person who directs and manages a company, an SME. This could be the owner of a family driven business, or a business person who buys and takes over an existing business. This can also be an entrepreneur who has started a business through innovation and remains directing and managing that company, without selling or leaving to start a new venture. The second in command in an SME This, extremely important entrepreneur is the most common non-executive entrepreneur in small business. An entrepreneur, as the number 2 in an SME is a vital position as it enables the company to develop in an innovative and goal orientated manner, with a careful balance of risks and opportunities. This kind of Intrapreneur is someone who has had experience of business or project start-ups and project management, and has now reached the moment where the experience and knowledge gained can be used to support another entrepreneur. The Corporate Intrapreneur This entrepreneurial role is becoming increasingly important within companies and organisations, as well as non-profit and governmental organisations, as they are forced to change, develop and innovate in the modern economy and business environment. Corporations require entrepreneurial business leaders who alongside their leadership qualities have a broad range of business skills and competencies and business administration knowledge. [-]

Business Analytics: A unique combination of disciplines Business Analytics is the science that deals with improving business processes through the extensive use of data and methods at the intersection of mathematics and computer science. The amount of data at businesses is exploding, whereas business processes and company strategies are becoming more complex. This leads to an enormous demand for data driven and mathematically well founded solutions. Business Analytics is a multidisciplinary program where you learn to understand processes and transform big data into actual decisions. The program offers a unique combination of the scientific disciplines of mathematics, computer science and business administration. In addition to your academic development, you will also evolve practical skills. Your professional career starts here, in the vibrant city of Amsterdam. Business Analytics at VU Amsterdam is a unique program by bringing together a combination of disciplines to prepare you for business success. You will learn how to collect and manipulate large data sets, how to analyse these data using statistics and data mining techniques, and how to use your findings to predict the future and make optimal decisions. You will work on a variety of business problems that modern businesses face every day. An example is the prediction of workload, cargo and the number of passengers travelling via Schiphol or specific airlines. Another example is product pricing for big fast food chains, or segmentation and profiling of customers. You may also work on detecting fraud based on a large dataset of financial transactions, or finding ways to mitigate financial risks for banks or insurance companies. It's all about turning (big) data into smart decisions. Future prospects As a graduate in Business Analytics you will enjoy a very strong position on the employment market: demand for BA graduates is high. Ninety percent of students enter full-time employment immediately on graduation (and some do so even before graduation). Many are offered a job by the company in which they completed their work placement. The private sector is constantly seeking ways to increase efficiency and effectiveness. A degree in Business Analytics opens up a variety of careers, including (ICT) consultancy (such as KPMG, Capgemini and Deloitte), as a datamining specialist / risk manager in the financial sector or a research career in the academic world. First & second year The first and second years involve a number of subjects covering business economics, mathematics and computer science. You will learn the basic principles of statistics and probability calculations, decision-making based on mathematical modelling, programming, using databases, and the principles of risk on the financial markets. Twice each year you will work on a project as part of a small team of fellow students. This helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing you to put your new knowledge to good use. Third Year In the third year, you can opt to take one of the ‘minor’ modules. This enables you to individualise the program according to your own interests and requirements. You might decide to take a minor in an entirely different discipline, thus adding breadth to your studies. Alternatively, you could study one of the many aspects of Business Analytics in greater depth. The Bachelor’s program culminates in a business case project. As part of a small team, you will attempt to solve a real-life business problem. You will visit the company concerned to gather the necessary information. Having arrived at your solution, you will give a presentation to management. The case study provides an excellent insight into the type of problems you will be asked to work on during your professional career. Admission requirements Whether or not you will actually be offered a place in our programme will also depend on your: - A diploma equivalent to a Dutch VWO diploma; - Proof of sufficient proficiency in Mathematics; - Proof of sufficient proficiency in English.
