Business Economics

As a field of applied economics, BA Business Economics studies the different factors that contribute to organizational diversity, and the relationship of firms with labor, markets and capital through quantitative analysis. It differs with other fields of applied economics, such as agricultural economics, health economics and demographic economics, in that it seeks to directly study the economics of business enterprises (as opposed to studying certain sectors as a whole, as with health or agriculture). The BA in Business Economics is therefore a highly popular program for students seeking to work in the corporate world; its graduates have consistently proven themselves to be among the most highly employable among economics graduates.

As a BA degree, Business Economics programs typically focus more on the socio-political aspects of business economics. Courses taught include anthropology, psychology, history of economics and public economics. Great attention is placed in renowned economic thinkers, such as Karl Marx, Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes. Actual core business economics subjects vary from university to university, with some focusing greatly on managerial economics and industrial economics.

Business economics is not uncommonly considered as synonymous with economics for business (i.e., applying economic principles to create best business practices); economics for business is taught as business economics in these universities where a distinction between the two is not made. On the other hand, some universities tend to frame their business economics programs more on corporate governance, investment analysis, business strategy, accounting and budgeting.

The expansion of business education in pre-university educational institutions in recent years has seen an increased demand for business educators. The increase in the number of educational institutions offering courses in accounting, management and economics has given rise to an increasing demand for teachers of these subjects. [+]

Rationale for the Programme The expansion of business education in pre-university educational institutions in recent years has seen an increased demand for business educators. The increase in the number of educational institutions offering courses in accounting, management and economics has given rise to an increasing demand for teachers of these subjects. However, it is reported that the supply of the right calibre of teachers has not matched the quality and quantity demanded. The current Universities do not seem to offer students with an in-depth knowledge and “hand on” skills in the area of training business teachers since the student teachers almost do most of the studies in the lecture theatre without having the opportunity to do practical attachment with senior high schools and financial institutions. It is therefore necessary to provide opportunity for students studying business, particularly, accounting, management and economics to concentrate specifically on both theories and practice so that they can fit perfectly into the job market. Emphasis is on accounting. Students are to minor in either economics or management. The B.Ed. Business studies programme, therefore, comes in handy as it is designed to meet the ever increasing demand for business educators and administrators for national development. Potential students can specialize in accounting, management and economics. The programme offers student-teachers the opportunity to have in-depth practical knowledge and experience in teaching accounting, management and economics at the senior high school. The programme ensures that good quality business teachers who can employ the pedagogical content knowledge in delivering various business topics are trained to meet the ever growing demand for such teachers for national development. Goal The overall goal of the programme is to produce trained and qualified business teachers who have adequate subject matter knowledge and can employ critical and reflective thinking in their analysis of educational issues in general, and curricular and pedagogical issues relating to business education in particular. Objectives The objectives of the programme are to: train business teachers and facilitators for senior high schools; produce teachers to undertake basic and applied research in business education; and prepare student-teachers for higher academic and professional pursuits in business. Job Opportunities Graduates, apart from being employed as Teachers in this field of study can also work as International Business Consultants, Economic and Budget Analysts, Project Managers, Business Managers, Administrative Officers and a host of other Managerial and Administrative positions.
