The Bachelor in Sustainability Management is aimed at students interested in becoming project managers in the areas of human development, social sciences, environmental sciences, international relations, corporate responsibility and project management. This is a Dual Degree with Western Illinois University and students may complete the degree spending two years in the U.S. and two years in Costa Rica or they may opt for spending three years in Costa Rica. This is a strong multidisciplinary program supported by the 17 SDGs as guides for education and research tools that prepare students to find solutions to the challenges related to sustainability.
SUSTAINABILITY AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT
The Bachelor’s Degree in Sustainability Management Dual Degree with Western Illinois University forms students on the principles of human and natural systems linkage, the tradeoffs necessary to solving problems in a sustainable way, the difference in assessing local sustainable issues and international issues, the role of policies and government, the importance of addressing sustainability from an interdisciplinary approach and creating multidisciplinary teams for problem solving.
Students will develop a strong foundation in critical thinking, systems thinking, international development and project management. They may opt for both the PMI certification CAPM in project management and the LEAN Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification.
Graduates from this degree will be well prepared to work in industry, consultancy, non-profit organizations, governmental organizations or even continue into graduate programs.
SUSTAINABILITY IN COSTA RICA MAKES SENSE!
Students can do two years in WIU and two years in Costa Rica or opt for doing the whole Degree in Costa Rica.

The Bachelor's Degree builds on Costa Rica's long-standing and increasing commitment to seeking sustainable solutions to pressing social, environmental and economic challenges, and its long-standing history of international cooperation in a variety of fields. Our main goal is to enthuse and inspire future leaders in a learning environment built around the SDGs and a systems focus to problem solving through collaboration, critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches.
Our courses are designed to provide innovative hands-on education and research opportunities that will prepare students to be active and effective citizens in seeking solutions to unsustainable practices and the valuing ecosystem services. These solutions will focus on the need for citizen participation and systems thinking in the promotion and adoption of sustainable consumption and production practices relating to water quality and usage, energy, materials and technology, food systems, climate mitigation and adaptation, and environmental policy, among others.

The Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Development Management is suitable for students interested in development studies, social, environmental and natural sciences, humanities, policy development and planning, international relations, sustainable business and project management.

Students do not have to select their project focus right away.
By the end of the 7th semester students will have a well-rounded perspective and be able to decide.
During the core semesters students can start to pay attention to their particular interests which should help in the selection of their specialization track.
When a student has questions in certain areas, he/she should try to talk with one of the faculty members specializing in the track areas.
Students should analyze and reflect on their long-term professional goals, and in line with their passions and life calling in order to choose and develop their specialization.

All students will be required to develop a small proposal and carry out a Summer fieldwork Practicum based on an area of interest covered in their individual Specialization Track. The proposal will involve a 3-week sessions implementing the tasks identified in the proposal with the purpose of achieving the desired outcomes and the writing of a brief report. Fieldwork projects will be developed in consultation with the corresponding faculty member. Innovative projects are encouraged and may include but are not limited to sustainability-related community environmental initiatives, civil-society participation, academic research, land management, sustainable agriculture, construction, etc.
Foreign students housing with homestay families can take the shuttle service to the host neighborhoods to avoid walking home after courses.
In addition to VERITAS standard admission requirements, the Bachelors in Sustainability Studies
also requires the following from High school first-time applicants:
A minimum high school cumulative grade of 80% or a 3.0 GPA.
A high intermediate level of written and oral usage of English and Spanish.
Students wishing to transfer from another institution must comply with the same GPA and language requirement as First-Time Students. Students transferring from other institutions may transfer up to 9 credit hours if transfer course contents have a minimum of a 75% equivalency to Veritas courses.
A minimum of 144 semester credit hours are required for graduation.
Students may also take at least 2 elective courses from the Center for international Programs or from the other programs at Veritas for intersection purposes.
For transfer students: No more than 12 semester hours may be earned by comprehensive examination for the bachelor’s degree in finance, statistics or math courses.
Students wishing to participate in the dual degree program with Western Illinois University must complete a minimum of 60 semester hours of VERITAS resident-credit courses and a minimum of 30 semester hours of WIU resident-credit courses to graduate in the bachelor’s degree. 30 online courses may be taken from WIU online catalog to fulfill the rest of the credits.
First-Year English writing
Completion of the two composition courses is required before advancing to track courses. Students from non-English-speaking countries must receive a minimum of a 75% in the English composition of the course.
The School of Sustainability requires all students to have a high intermediate command of both written and oral Spanish and English languages. A good management of English and Spanish is required due to Latin America being a key regional partner in relation to natural resource management, trade agreements, and inter-institutional relations and cooperation. Therefore a good command of both languages will enable the student to study adequately within this context and develop a good understanding of these sectors. In addition, many of the present and pertinent climate change issues are dependent on the conservation of resources in Latin America and English is the international language used in many of the global events and international platforms discussing them. Students must demonstrate “proficiency” in a second language at a high intermediate level.
Students can submit approval of a second Language requirement by:
Completion of their second language course work at the high intermediate level (202 or equivalent; those students completing this requirement Spanish or English).
A second language course at the 300-level or higher taught in the second language and having 202 or its equivalent as a prerequisite.
Presenting certification in any one of the English proficiency tests: IELTS 5-6, ITEP/TOEFL 35-59 or TOEIC 526-750 or the DELE B2 test for non-Spanish native speakers.
