The IFT's BA Heritage Management is a programme designed with the modern hospitality professional in mind. The programme includes 42 courses, an internship (third year) and thesis writing. Following courses are on the list inter alia: Introduction to Heritage Management This course introduces the subject of heritage management and provides a framework of all courses in this subject specialisation. The course will principally explore the underlying principles of heritage management. It will examine how heritage management works and how it can form a useful partnership with tourism to manage the common resources that they both share in a sustainable manner. The course aims to provide students with a framework for analysing the complementary and competing demands made by heritage management and tourism business management. How such demands arise during the planning and development of heritage tourism attractions and products will be discussed throughout the course using local and international examples. Heritage Interpretation The effectiveness of the interpretation and presentation of a heritage asset aids in the understanding of the cultural value of such assets by visitors. This course will address how heritage assets can become attractions that visitors can easily consume and understand (particularly, when the balance of education with entertainment is right). The discussion of interpretation in this course will cover the concepts and techniques for the generation of the messages about the cultural value of the asset or attraction for the visitor. The course will address how visitor experience is central to the absorption of interpretation messages and in the management and planning of such attractions. It will outline the concepts and strategies currently employed for best practice interpretation/presentation and discuss some specific cases in detail. Heritage Charters and Legislation This course introduces the international, regional and local principles and legal frameworks for heritage management. Students are expected to review critically the key charters and local heritage laws and analyse the relevance of the principles stated in the charters and effectiveness of the laws within a given context.
