The biology major at UIU is unique in the capstone research experience, in which students apply the concepts they have learned by investigating a topic of their choosing with a faculty mentor. Students design, perform, and present their research to others, practicing skills that are valued highly by employers and graduate/professional schools. This experience helps make our students competitive within their field, and confident in their abilities and applied knowledge. Courses The biology major offers a series of core courses structured around classes that provide the foundation of the biological studies. From there, the biology major has emphases that allow you to tailor your studies to your individual career goals and provide you with “Choice Content.” Emphasis areas Pre-professional emphasis: This emphasis prepares you for entrance into professional programs such as medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, chiropractic, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and veterinary medicine programs. Medical Lab Sciences emphasis: Clinical or medical laboratory technicians collect and analyze samples to aid in the diagnosis and appropriate treatment of patients with disease. For example, UIU graduates of clinical laboratory sciences have furthered their careers through the Medical Laboratory Science Program at the Mayo Clinic. Biology is a story of survival. Biologists study living systems and ask questions about life, such as: What environmental and physiological factors affect the distribution and abundance of organisms on the earth? How do cells change as they age, and how does this affect the whole organism? How can genetics help answer questions about disease, adaptation, behavior, or extinction? How do matter and energy flow through ecosystems, and how is this flow being affected by human activities? To answer these and other questions, the Biology Department prepares students for a variety of professions and careers. All students enrolling in biology will begin working toward a B.A. degree, a program that gives students a strong preparation in biology with supporting courses in mathematics, chemistry, and physics. It also allows students to combine this program with over 20 credits from other academic departments, a flexibility that allows students to pursue a minor in computers, communications, business, or other programs. Cornell’s One Course At A Time (OCAAT) schedule allows students to practice “real-time” science that could not fit into the limited time available in other academic calendars. In our biology courses, students: make frequent field trips to local wetlands, prairies, woods, etc carry out molecular analyses in class grow cells and test their responses to drugs learn anatomy in our own cadaver lab design and implement ecological experiments participate in community service projects The block plan also offers extraordinary opportunities for extended off-campus learning. Courses such as Ecology, Entomology, and Plant Morphology are taught at the Wilderness Field Station in northern Minnesota. Other recent courses have traveled to the Estuarine Field Station in Georgia and to the Missouri Botanical Garden.
