This test consists of 20 basic algebra problems and is an established measure of readiness and likelihood of success in introductory Biology and Chemistry courses. A score of 13/20 or better on the test is required for placement into BIOL 120 and CHEM 115: Chemistry I (see sequences below). Students with scores of 12/20 or lower will be placed into CHEM 114: Foundations of Chemistry in the Spring Semester of the first year (see sequences below). The Biology Major can be completed successfully in four years through either of the sequences described below. Students wishing to enter BIOL 120 and CHEM 115 in the fall of their second year and who have not completed CHEM 114 must take the science placement test in the spring of their first year. Students who do not score 13/20 or better at this time may retake the placement test at the start of the Fall Semester. However it is not possible to complete a Biology Major in three years starting with CHEM 114 in the second year. Biology internships Instead of teaching what scientists know, we’re educating students to become scientists. Because our students know how to analyze data, think critically, and solve problems they get some of the top internships in the most prestigious institutions and labs across the country. Biologically-related topics regularly make the news including the human genome project, global climate change, pollution, environmental concerns, species diversity, genetics and rapid advances in medicine and biotechnology. These are only some of the interests of biologists in today’s world. As human understanding of the self and the surrounding world has expanded, we have begun to understand the importance of all the organisms that share the world in which we live. Work in the many areas that require knowledge of biology requires highly educated and curious individuals with backgrounds in the liberal arts, business, chemistry, physics, mathematics and the life sciences. Biology Career, Research, Internship Opportunities Career Opportunities Biology graduates have numerous career opportunities. Government positions can include wildlife management and environmental research. Private industry uses trained biologists in areas such as sales, management, research and writing. Many additional possibilities exist in the areas of medicine and allied health. Quite a few of our graduates have chosen to continue their education in biology at the graduate and professional school level. Research Opportunities The biology curriculum at Rockford University is designed to develop a strong educational foundation along with the practical skills to perform research in the biological sciences. These skills are further solidified during senior seminar, where our students are challenged to design and implement a research project of choice with the guidance of a faculty advisor. To supplement research experiences on campus, many biology majors have completed research projects through the National Science Foundation's 'Research Experiences for Undergraduates' program. Internship Opportunities Rockford University works with a variety of companies and organizations in the Rockford area to provide internship opportunities for biology majors. Our students have done internships with Pierce Biotechnology, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, National Land Institute and Nature Conservancy. David Kaplan (F’06) will be spending a year doing biomedical research in Bethesda, Maryland through the National Institute of Health’s Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award program. Lucas Bradley (F ’06) is the education coordinator for the Natural Land Institute. Jeannie Harrison (S ’05) will be in her 3rd year of veterinary school at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. She is also in the University of Illinois program for a master's in public health. Hanee Razick (F ’05) is a pharmaceutical sales representative with Forest Laboratories. Eliona Andoni (S ’02) graduated with a D.O. from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University. Christine Baumgardt (S ’05) works for Steris in St. Louis doing Research & Development. Lori Culver (’02) is a sales trainer of pharmaceutical sales representatives for the Ross Products Division of Abbott. Heath Morrall (S ’02) is working for Euclid Chemical a division of RPM International. He is doing sales for the company which is a manufacturer of construction chemicals. Biology Scholarships and Awards Larry Forman Memorial Biology Scholarship The Forman Scholarship is given in memory of Larry Forman, professor of biology at Rockford University from 1969 until 2003. Scholarship recipients must be full-time students, majoring in biology, with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and in good standing with the University. Lane Beishir Memorial Award The Lane Beishir Memorial Award is awarded to a junior or senior biology major who demonstrates a potential for a career in the life sciences and who has shown initiative in participating in the life of the biology department.
