A Bachelor's degree is a degree awarded by universities and colleges. In order to earn a bachelor's degree, you must complete the necessary courses that may last three to seven years depending on your institution of enrollment.

Bachelors in Biology in North America 2017. The Field Biology is the study of life and living organisms, including their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution. In order to succeed in biology, students should be passionate about the natural world and demonstrate strong analytical and problem solving skills. Biology at Skyline College While taking biology classes at Skyline College, students can expect to learn proper scientific reporting techniques and a thorough understanding of the scientific method, and they will use biological study, observation and experimentation to test hypotheses and analyze results. Biology classes also fulfill General Education requirements for a variety of majors. The college also offers Environmental Science classes that provide a strong interdisciplinary approach to understanding environmental issues from a scientific perspective. Environmental science brings together the disciplines of biological, physical and earth sciences to address the impact of humans on ecological systems. While Skyline College does not currently offer an Associate Degree in Biology specifically, students can earn degrees in Biotechnology or Natural Science that can help you create a clear path for transfer to a four-year institution. Career Outlook The applications for a course of study in Biology, or a degree in Biotechnology or Natural Science, include a variety of careers in the sciences in both private and public industry. Many jobs in biology or the natural sciences require a Ph.D.; taking biology classes or pursuing a Biotechnology or Natural Science degree at Skyline College is a good launching point for pursuing further education at a four-year college or university. Biologists spend much of their time working in offices and conducting research in laboratories. Most biologists work full time. Misión El programa de Licenciado en Biología Marina tiene la Misión de formar profesionistas con un perfil integral y valores éticos que le den competencia para generar conocimiento y comprender los procesos biológicos de los organismos marinos, que conduzcan al manejo adecuado de los recursos biológicos marinos, así como para detectar y proponer estrategias de producción y colaborar en el desarrollo social y cultural de los diferentes sectores, preservando el ambiente marino dentro del marco del desarrollo sustentable. Visión Se prevé que para el año 2030 la Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias, Zona Poza Rica Tuxpan de la Universidad Veracruzana goce de prestigio nacional e internacional en función de sus actividades de docencia, investigación y difusión del conocimiento, particularmente en el área de Biología Marina. Para esto, formará profesionales capacitados y desarrollará programas de investigación para atender los problemas del ambiente marino en relación a la biodiversidad, la producción y el manejo. El programa de Biología Marina contará con certificación por parte de los organismos acreditadores de Educación Superior y ésto le permitirá ofrecer servicios de calidad a la sociedad con el más alto nivel ético y profesional, manteniendo así una vinculación permanente con los diferentes sectores sociales. Entre los elementos que favorecerán esta Visión, se contará con una plantilla docente de tiempo completo con carga diversificada y con posgrado en un 100 %, de éstos al menos el 30 % pertenecerá al SNI y el 100 % tendrán el reconocimiento de perfil PROMEP. Además, todos los profesores estarán integrados a cuerpos académicos que estarán incorporados a redes nacionales e internacionales. El 50 % de los egresados de esta licenciatura acreditarán el examen general de calidad profesional y de estos el 50 % lograrán el reconocimiento de alto rendimiento. Biological Sciences We offer Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degrees in two areas: Health Science, which focuses on human biology, and Biodiversity and Ecology, which concentrates on non-human organisms and their environment. Students learn to critically evaluate scientific claims and evidence, and to clearly articulate their thoughts orally and in writing – necessary skills for success in future study or science-related careers. Our indoor laboratory facilities include molecular biology equipment, aquatic and terrestrial animal rooms, a greenhouse, walk-in-growth chambers, laminar flow hoods, incubators, centrifuges, and research microscopes. What Can I Do with a Bishop’s Biology degree? A Bishop’s Biology degree can prepare you for: Advanced study (M.Sc./Ph.D.) in health sciences, environmental studies, or biological/life sciences Professional programs such as education, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or physiotherapy Employment in fields as diverse as biotechnology, environmental assessment, and wildlife management Student Club The Biology Club is the official social club for students enrolled in the Biological Sciences. The club is also open to students of other departments who have an interest in biology. Run by the students with help from the departmental technician, Ben Hobson, and various faculty, the club is dedicated to helping students enjoy themselves throughout their time in the department. The club facilitates access to supplemental training that students might otherwise not receive in their academic program. Held every semester, the wine and cheese celebrations are great ice-breakers for new students and also give upper year students the chance to catch up with old friends. Other activities organized by the club include camping and hiking trips, first aid courses, firearm safety courses, and golf tournaments. Courses & Programs Incoming Biology students choose between two degrees: the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). They also must choose between two concentrations: Health Sciences, and Biodiversity and Ecology. Upper-year B.Sc. students also have the opportunity to transfer into the Honours program in their final year if they meet certain requirements. What is the difference between the B.Sc. and a B.A.? The B.Sc. degree requires a strong grounding in the core sciences (math, physics, and chemistry). The B.Sc. is the best option if you intend to apply to graduate (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) or professional (e.g. medicine or physiotherapy) programs. Students with a strong interest in biology but not a strong grounding in the basic sciences thrive in the B.A. Biology program. The B.A is much more flexible than the B.Sc., and many students pair it with a second B.A. major. For example, a student interested in governmental health policy might choose a B.A. in Biology (Health Science) and a B.A. in Political Science, whereas an environmentally-oriented student might pair a B.A. Biology (Biodiversity and Ecology) with a B.A. in Environmental Studies. What is the difference between Health Sciences and Biodiversity and Ecology? Health Science prepares students for graduate school in biomedical fields such as cell biology or physiology, and is usually the choice of students hoping to enter medicine, dentistry, or other health-related professional programs. Many of these students also enroll in the Pre-Medicine program. Students interested in wildlife biology, ecology, zoology, plant science, and/or the environment should choose the Biodiversity and Ecology concentration. This degree prepares students for employment or graduate studies in these varied environmental and organismal fields. What is a B.Sc. Honours Degree? The Biology Honours B.Sc. prepares the student for graduate work in either the Life Sciences or the fields of Biodiversity and Ecology. Some professional schools also prefer that students have an Honours degree prior to entry. Honours students plan, execute, and report the findings of an independent research project conducted under the guidance of one or more faculty members. They also take additional Biology courses in the areas of experimental design and scientific writing (and correspondingly fewer electives). Students apply for entry into this program in their U3 year (i.e. the year prior to their graduating year). Entry into the program is based on marks and the availability of an appropriate faculty supervisor. See the links below for more details about Honours. What are the Required and Optional Courses for Each Program? All Biology programs have a central core of courses that all students must take to graduate, plus a list of optional and required courses specific to their own concentration. All Biology students will start with a fixed series of core courses. After this, each student will then have a series “required concentration courses” that each student enrolled in that particular concentration must also take. Each concentration then has a further list of options from which students in that concentration can select so as to meet their requirement of “concentration options”. The Biology/Chemistry Department at Toccoa Falls College is located in the Clary Science Building and offers essential training in the natural sciences for the liberal arts curriculum taught from a Biblical perspective, with special emphasis on these areas of study: Biology Major: Every major area of biological study is included in the major courses, along with general and organic chemistry, physics, and biochemistry. Pre-medical: TFC has a strong record of placement of graduates in medical schools, including acceptance of TFC students at Georgia Health Sciences University (MCG), University of Tennessee, and Mercer University. All of the courses required or recommended by medical schools are offered on campus. Pre-nursing: TFC has had many students enter nursing programs, both at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Graduates of this program demonstrate knowledge in three sub-disciplines of biology: cellular and molecular biology, organismal biology, and ecology and evolution. Students are consistently engaged in the scientific process through the planning, execution and interpretation of laboratory or field studies. Major in Environmental Sustainability The environmental sustainability major focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to sustaining the quality of our natural world, with an emphasis on the inter- relationships between the natural world and humanity. The environmental sus- tainability major at EMU is designed around an understanding that effectively addressing the pressing environmental problems of our times demands a multifaceted approach that requires both depth in an area of focus, and breadth in understanding the perspectives of different disciplines. Students gain depth by choosing to concentrate on either natural science or social science aspects of environmental sustainability. Students gain breadth through coursework that combines essential elements from social science and from natural science to bring a holistic and integrated perspective to complex social and environmental issues pertaining to sustainability. In addition, the environmental sustainability curriculum recognizes a balance between technical training and the broad education of a liberal arts philosophy. Completion of the environ- mental sustainability major equips students to work in fields of conservation, environmental monitoring, agriculture, international development, alternative energy promotion and development, sustainable development, agricultural extension, environmental advocacy, and environmental education. In addition, the curriculum prepares students for graduate work in many areas related to sustainability. The curriculum for environmental sustainability is conceptualized as three stages. Students from both concentrations begin their coursework together in two introductory courses which set the foundation for further work. Students then take a set of required and elective courses in their chosen concentration that gives depth in their area of focus, plus elective coursework in the alternative concentration which gives breadth to their understanding of sustainability. Major in Clinical Laboratory Science A major in clinical laboratory science consists of the 37 SH listed below followed by completion of the clinical program (usually one year) in an approved school of clinical laboratory science/medical technology. In this program the student completes three years of study (a minimum of 96 SH) at Eastern Mennonite University and a fourth year at the school of clinical laboratory science/medical technology. EMU has articulation agreements with Clinical Laboratory Science programs at Sentara RMH Medical Center, Augusta Health Center, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Alternatively a student may elect to complete the biology major and enter the clinical program following receipt of the baccalaureate degree. Minor in Biology A non-biology major may earn a minor in biology by taking at least 18 SH of biology courses. Because students of other majors will have a variety of reasons for desiring a biology minor, a fixed sequence of courses is not specified. However, two courses must be at the 300 or 400 level and up to two courses may be labeled as ENVS or BIOCH. Students are urged to consult with a biology faculty member in outlining a minor. Professors Who are Mentors Our school’s small size means ready access to equipment and individual instruction. Professors who are mentors help you develop skills in scientific interpretation and an awareness of the ethical issues that surround science. They emphasize the harmony between the natural world and God’s Word. Biology is one of the biggest programs at EMU because we have an excellent reputation. Our graduates are sought both by graduate schools and employers – they know EMU biology grads are well-prepared critical thinkers with real-world experience. Faculty and Student Research At EMU we believe that participation in original research projects is an important means of teaching scientific process and critical thinking skills. Biology majors participate in faculty-led research projects as a means of learning by doing. Often students choose a specific project that falls within a larger, ongoing, research project in the laboratory of a faculty member. Students meet on a regular basis with faculty to discuss progress, and sometimes get together with other research groups to exchange ideas. In some cases, research results lead to presentations at national scientific meetings or publications in scientific journals. Biology faculty also work closely with research projects in chemistry.
