De manera general, se notan coincidencias en cuanto a las asignaturas básicas relacionadas con la diversidad biológica marina y con las matemáticas y química así como en las experiencias educativas integradoras (e.g. evolución). Propone el desarrollo social y humano basado en un conocimiento preciso de los recursos marinos naturales que permita su conservación para las generaciones futuras. Por lo tanto el egresado tendrá la capacidad técnica y teórica para proponer: Estrategias de estudio de la diversidad biológica marina Elaborar diagnósticos sobre el estado de conservación de los ecosistemas marinos Proponer pautas de manejo para las especies y los ecosistemas marino-costeros Establecer lineamientos y estrategias para restaurar los ambientes marinos y recuperar especies en peligro. Misión El programa de Licenciado en Biología Marina tiene la Misión de formar profesionistas con un perfil integral y valores éticos que le den competencia para generar conocimiento y comprender los procesos biológicos de los organismos marinos, que conduzcan al manejo adecuado de los recursos biológicos marinos, así como para detectar y proponer estrategias de producción y colaborar en el desarrollo social y cultural de los diferentes sectores, preservando el ambiente marino dentro del marco del desarrollo sustentable. Visión Se prevé que para el año 2030 la Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas y Agropecuarias, Zona Poza Rica Tuxpan de la Universidad Veracruzana goce de prestigio nacional e internacional en función de sus actividades de docencia, investigación y difusión del conocimiento, particularmente en el área de Biología Marina. Para esto, formará profesionales capacitados y desarrollará programas de investigación para atender los problemas del ambiente marino en relación a la biodiversidad, la producción y el manejo. El programa de Biología Marina contará con certificación por parte de los organismos acreditadores de Educación Superior y ésto le permitirá ofrecer servicios de calidad a la sociedad con el más alto nivel ético y profesional, manteniendo así una vinculación permanente con los diferentes sectores sociales. Entre los elementos que favorecerán esta Visión, se contará con una plantilla docente de tiempo completo con carga diversificada y con posgrado en un 100 %, de éstos al menos el 30 % pertenecerá al SNI y el 100 % tendrán el reconocimiento de perfil PROMEP. Además, todos los profesores estarán integrados a cuerpos académicos que estarán incorporados a redes nacionales e internacionales. El 50 % de los egresados de esta licenciatura acreditarán el examen general de calidad profesional y de estos el 50 % lograrán el reconocimiento de alto rendimiento. The background offered by this major, however, is entirely appropriate for preparation for upper division emphasis in other professional fields like medical, dental, or veterinary school. This AS degree, as presented, also satisfies the requirements for an AA/OT for ease of transfer to UO. By completing general education requirements for the AA/OT, as well as the recommended science courses, students will be able transfer to UO and complete a BS in Marine Biology or a BS in Biology with Marine Biology Emphasis. Career options for marine biology graduates include jobs in state and federal government, advanced training for research and teaching in the marine sciences, and most other careers available to broadly trained biologists. The following program outline is one of many possible course configurations that would satisfy the requirements for an AS Marine Biology Emphasis and AA/OT transfer degree and also fulfill basic requirements for graduation from UO. Students regularly travel to Discovery Bay, Jamaica, for exploration of the coral reef, turtle grass beds, rocky shore, and mangrove swamp. Recently, a student interned at the Manatee Hospital at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa, Florida. Several nearby ecologically significant lakes, rivers, and streams provide unique opportunities for field research in aquatic ecology. In the past, students have helped evaluate the effectiveness of a porous rock barrier in Lake Michigan designed to keep fish away from a nearby electrical generating station. As the program develops, specialized field courses in chemical and physical oceanography, marine geology and marine instrumentation will be added. It is anticipated that the growing recognition for marine technicians will result in expanded career opportunities for those who complete the undergraduate program.
