Biology

A Bachelor's degree is a degree awarded by universities and colleges. In order to earn a bachelor's degree, you must complete the necessary courses that may last three to seven years depending on your institution of enrollment.

Graduates of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology will be knowledgeable in diverse areas related to biological sciences. These areas range from genetics and evolution, to ecology or cellular biology. The degree is then involved with the theory and practice of animal and plant biology, by observation and analysis of biological systems.

There are more than four thousand higher education organizations in Europe, from leading research institutions to small, teaching-focused universities. Europe itself is not as much different than other continents, reaching from the Arctic Circle to the coast of Africa.

Bachelor in Life Sciences The medical and pharmaceutical industry is constantly looking for new ways to prevent and cure diseases. Plant development companies try to develop new ways to optimise the growth and production of crops. Environmental companies look for innovative solutions to environmental problems. Dedicated professionals working in laboratories all over the world are at the heart of this research. Become one of them by studying Life Sciences at HAN! Course Start September 2017 Course overview Life Sciences at HAN University of Applied Sciences is a hands-on four-year Bachelors course that is taught in English. During your studies, you gain theoretical knowledge, but you also spend more than half of your time doing practical work. So when you graduate, you are well prepared for the job market. Life Sciences is the international and English-language equivalent of the Biology stream within the Dutch Bachelors course Biologie en Medisch Laboratoriumonderzoek (Biology and Medical Laboratory Research). Except for the language of instruction, the two courses are identical in terms of both content and level. Orientation The 1st year offers an orientation to the life sciences: you learn about fundamental theories and lab techniques. You apply your new knowledge in small group projects dealing with problems from the field of life sciences. These projects help you to develop your problem-solving and communication skills. They also give you insight into current issues that are relevant to professional practice. Increasing independence Over the next three years, as you broaden your knowledge and sharpen your analytical skills, you will learn with increasing independence. You will participate in projects with an increasing level of complexity. You also complete a work placement, an elective module and an independent graduation assignment. The assignment involves planning and conducting your own experiments. You then present your results in a professional manner, for example, in a final report to your project advisers or in a presentation. Subjects in the Life Sciences course Molecular Biology Molecular Genetics Cell Biology Microbiology Immunology Virology Bioinformatics Molecular Plant Biology Carcinogenesis Immunology Physiology of Plants and Animals Communication Skills (written and oral) Research Skills Academic year The academic year starts in September and ends in June. It is spread over 42 weeks and is divided into two semesters and each semester is divided into two terms. You take exams, write reports and give presentations at the end of each term. Your instructors will evaluate your work each semester and advise you on your progress. They will also coach you so that you can achieve the best results possible. Academic Progress Students can obtain a maximum of 60 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) per academic year. After the first year students must have gained 37.5 ECTS in order not to get a Binding Negative Study Advice (BNSA). A BNSA means that you cannot continue your studies in your Bachelor course anymore. HAN is required to report to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) on the BNSA of the students holding a residence permit for study purposes. This has consequences for your residence permit. Career opportunities As a Life Sciences graduate, you will have countless employers to choose from, including health care providers and commercial enterprises. Many of our Life Sciences graduates work in molecular biology research labs, for example. You can also choose to continue your studies. HAN's Life Sciences graduates often go on to successfully complete Masters degree courses. Diploma Supplement A candidate who is awarded a diploma on completion of the final assessment, will receive an English-language Diploma Supplement. The Diploma Supplement is set up in accordance with the format determined by HAN's Governing Board and with the additional regulations determined by the Board of Examiners and/or faculty management. A Diploma Supplement includes the name and signature of the president of the Board of Examiners and an official HAN University of Applied Sciences stamp. The Board of Examiners ensures that a copy of the Diploma Supplement is filed and kept indefinitely. This international semester aims to gather students in their senior year of Bachelor from foreign universities in the world to experience project-based learning in an interdisciplinary and stimulating international setting. The purpose of teaching in an interdisciplinary way The FDV bachelor was created in 2011 with the aim to teach interdisciplinary approaches to life science through research-based teaching and innovative pedagogy. The goal is to teach the students not only the content, but also the essential 21st century skills – learning to learn, creativity, critical thinking, collaborative work and use of modern technology in working environment. Thanks to those efforts the undergraduate program “Frontiers in Life Science” was recognized by receiving a UNESCO label, as well as an MCE innovation in pedagogy award. Spring International semester (iFDV semester) We are seeking students from diverse scientific backgrounds who can justify their motivation for joining a research-oriented program and can demonstrate they are independent learners. The aim is to find students who are motivated by innovation in learning and who show interest in interdisciplinary life science. The iFDV semester consists of highly integrated modules designed for an interdisciplinary investigation of biological systems. Interdisciplinarity in life sciences is explored at the interfaces between biology – physics and chemistry; biology – mathematics and computers science; biology and medicine. SCIENTIFIC CONTENT “Frontiers in Life Science” Program should not be seen as a degree program in biology, but as an interdisciplinary training for students who are curious about science in general. Even though the living world is at the heart of the studied systems, the teaching is balanced between biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and computer science. [-]
