Bachelor in Biology Welcome to biology at Birmingham-Southern! We offer a dynamic academic program that prepares our students for a variety of careers in health care, research, and related fields in a collaborative welcoming atmosphere. Our students don't just study science, they DO science—in our classrooms and laboratories, on field trips and research projects, and through pre-professional internships and study abroad experiences. Our program emphasizes hands-on learning in ways that sharpen the problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are the foundation of a successful career. Small classes and labs allow faculty to guide students in small group and one-on-one settings; our classrooms and labs are housed in the state-of-the-art Elton B. Stephens Science Center, stocked with equipment undergraduates at many other schools never see. Birmingham-Southern biology students go on to be doctors, dentists, and nurses, researchers seeking to cure diseases, and teachers educating the next generation of scientists. But there are other options you may not have thought of: patent lawyers, genetic counselors, biomedical illustrators and many more. Here at Birmingham-Southern’s biology department: Our Biology Research Program offers opportunities to work alongside faculty investigating exciting and relevant scientific problems. These include the Summer Research Associate Program. Seniors participate in the Capstone Research Experience. Our active Pre-Health Program allows students to work alongside practitioners with internships and shadowing opportunities and meet with administrators from medical, dental, and other professional schools. Our Health Professions Advisory Committee advises students from day one on how to prepare for professional school and helps with the application process so you have the best chance of getting into the professional school you want. You’ll get out into the field, whether that means an international experience like an ecology trip to the Galapagos Islands, scuba diving with professors on a coral reef in Honduras, or simply conducting class experiments at our own Turkey Creek Nature Preserve just a few miles from campus. Research at BSC One of our department's greatest strengths is our research program. Students planning a career in research get valuable one-on-one training and a head start on their careers. Pre-health students get an edge over other applicants and show professional schools how serious they are. Whatever their end goal, all participants in our research program hone their writing, public speaking, problem solving, critical thinking, and self-discipline skills. All of our biology majors work closely with a faculty member on a research project for two semesters as part of their Senior Capstone Experience (BI 470, BI 472 or BI 499). They share their research findings with the entire BSC community during the annual Senior Science and Mathematics Conference; some also present at regional or national scientific conferences or even coauthor papers based on their research.
