In their senior year, they design and execute an apparel collection under the guidance of a professional designer to be shown at the school's annual Silver Needle Runway Show. The Design major has been constructed to fully explore the critical elements of fashion design. Course offerings support all aspects of the design and construction process as well as the application of fashion industry-specific technology and software. The curriculum balances the creative aspects of design concept, drawing, color and rendering, collection development, etc. with technical education in sewing, textiles, patternmaking and draping, and the application of fashion industry-relevant technology including the newest industry computer software. Particular emphasis on critique of portfolios and design collections allows students to experience corrective criticism within the supportive environment of the Program as well as under the guidance of industry professionals. Internships are also emphasized as a key to developing those skills necessary to prosper in the business world. The combination of technical and creative design courses are augmented by an array of elective courses, including Couture Techniques, Knitwear Design, 3-D Printing and many others. Short-term studies to Europe and Asia, and full semester abroad studies in London, Paris, Florence & Hong Kong round out the students education. Design majors are encouraged to pursue a minor in Fashion Merchandising or Product Development. These minors encourage a designer's development toward a more universal understanding of the fashion industry and nurture a strong competitive advantage in the employment market. The BS in Digital Media is designed to allow students the opportunity to explore, in depth, the new exciting field of Digital Media under the guidance of recognized working artists, designers, and educators. It combines courses in digital media with a balanced curriculum of art studio, art history and liberal arts. The degree is flexible and can be tailored to students' interests. Students can choose to enhance their studies with courses in Communication, Information Technology, or professional internships. The Digital Media student will gain broad-based training in a wide range of new media using powerful software and equipment, as well as an understanding of Digital Media concepts, history and heritage in the traditional media. The Digital Media Studio houses two computer labs. All computers are iMacs with 27" monitors, 16 gigs of RAM, DVD-RW drives, and work station level video cards. Every computer is loaded with the latest versions of industry-standard software including the Adobe CC Master suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, After Effects, and Adobe Premiere Pro), Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling and animation and Corel Painter for digital painting. Every computing station is also equipped with its own high quality Epson flatbed scanner for both transparency and reflective scanning and a Wacom digitizing tablet. In addition, there is a special scanning and printing area, with a dedicated 35mm film scanner and 11 x 17" flatbed scanner for oversize work. The networked printers include a color laser printer capable of printing up to 11 x 17" duplex in full color and a black and white 1200 dpi laser printer. A state of the art large format Epson printer is also available for printing large images up to 24" wide. Students have access to the digital labs seven days a week, during regular Steel Plant Art Studios hours. Even when a digital media class is taking place in one lab, the other is always available for students to work on projects. All computers are networked together so your files are available to you wherever and whenever you choose to work. High speed internet is always available in the Steel Plant, both as a wired and wireless option. Digital Media Careers Careers in digital media are considered to be among the fastest growing areas of employment.
