Print media, television, cinema, the Internet, and radio are central to the ways in which we now communicate, educate, and create art. Studying film and media allows us to better understand how media connects us to the world and how we interact with each other. After graduation, an MFS student is well prepared to join this evolving media-based world in which we live. Media and Film Studies at Birmingham-Southern College is an innovative, interdisciplinary program that is grounded in Film and Media Studies while being informed by other disciplines in the social sciences, the humanities, and the arts. The program also stresses the ways in which academic study and artistic practices are mutually informative. Students in the MFS program develop and apply their skills in critical thinking, oral communication, and persuasive writing, in the true liberal arts tradition. What is Media and Film Studies? Media and Film Studies at Birmingham-Southern College focuses on the critical examination of film and film production; the historical and cultural understanding of text; and the analysis of the psychological, sociological, and political impacts of mass media. In addition to film, the course of study represents all forms of media and media production, including art, digital systems, print and broadcast news, the trade press, television, photojournalism, the Internet, and emerging information systems, as well as social media. Bachelor in Theatre and Musical Theatre At BSC, our theatre professors know that production skills are best learned through active participation in the classroom and on the stage. We place equal importance on learning and doing, and our students are well prepared for graduate work and for careers in professional and educational theatre – or for whatever path they choose. As well as nationally-recognized performers, we regularly have theatre majors go on to become doctors, lawyers, arts administrators, educators, and more. Here’s what makes theatre special at BSC Our department is a small community of students and professors in love with what they are doing. They’ll help you find your passion, discover what you love to do, and develop your skills to their greatest potential. We complete four major productions each year and six to ten student-led productions. That means you’ll get plenty of opportunities to learn the entire process hands-on, including acting, set and lighting design, costumes, choreography, company management, and playwriting. Theatre students are active in productions throughout their four years at BSC; freshmen are encouraged to get involved as soon as they arrive on campus. Our unique January E-Term gives you four weeks to work on a theatre project, take an audition class, write a play, or explore something else that interests you. We offer a BA in theatre arts and a BA in musical theatre. Classes are provided for students interested in a career in the performing arts and for those approaching theatre with a more general interest. Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the Theatre Arts major, students will be able to: Perform acting goals and tactics Execute theatre designs using appropriate technology Function successfully as a member of an ensemble Upon completion of the Musical Theatre major, students will be able to: Perform acting goals and tactics Execute theatre designs using appropriate technology Function successfully as a member of an ensemble Integrate musical analysis and performance Theatre Scholarships Each spring, the Theatre Department hosts a Scholarship Day to allow prospective students the opportunity to compete for the various financial awards offered by the division. Auditions for Theatre are Saturday February 15, 2014. Theatre scholarships are awarded based on an audition and interview with the theatre faculty. For musical theatre, the audition consists of sixteen measures each from two Broadway/Off Broadway songs and one monologue of no longer than one minute in length. Auditionees should choose material close to their age and experience -- please, no Shakespeare or dialects. No CDs. An accompanist will be provided. For theatre, the audition consists of two monologues of no longer than one minute in length each. Each auditionee should provide an 8 X 10 headshot along with a resume and any letters of support. All auditionees will participate in theatre games and have the opportunity for a one-on-one interview with a theatre faculty member. Students interested in technical theatre and design should bring with them a portfolio of their work. [-]
