This new degree course will continue to offer practice based training to students who are interested in a career in professional theatre, TV and film. It has been enhanced to provide increased opportunities in specialist areas within stage management and technical theatre (e.g. sound, lighting and construction), increased professional placements and a major research project relevant to a student’s choice of specialism. Classes on production management, design (set, lighting, costume and sound) and managing your own freelance business will also be introduced during the final year. Year one - Introduction Year one is designed to introduce students to practice based training in all technical departments including lighting, sound, prop making, scenic art, costume, set construction and stage management. Core skills based classes in theatre skills, theatre technologies and theatre studies will be complemented by practice based learning on in-house productions. Year two - Application Year two will see students apply the skills learned from their first year to a series of theatre and film productions, directed and designed by professional practitioners. Each student will have the opportunity to become a head of department and work alongside their peers to deliver a full production. Year Three - Advanced In year three students will undertake work placements with prominent theatre companies, festivals and industry related companies in order to further develop their chosen area of specialism. Research projects will be assigned according to the preferred career choice of each individual student. These projects can be theoretical or practical in nature, for example designing the sound, making the scenic art or making props for a theatre production. Students will be encouraged to keep a journal of reflective practices throughout their final year. The practical training during the degree course will be complemented with a range of classes including theatre history, principles of stage management and principles of theatre technology. Led by dedicated and experienced theatre technicians and stage managers these classes will reflect best practices in professional theatre. Academic approval is expected to be confirmed in January/February 2017. In the unlikely event of a significant delay, the course will continue to be offered as a two year professional diploma in stage management and technical theatre in 2017. Applicants will receive confirmation of the approval of degree status as soon as the process is complete. Application Requirements Please note: The Bachelor in Stage Management and Technical Theatre Degree is not part of the CAO point’s race. Students are expected to have achieved the minimum matriculation requirements for Trinity College Dublin courses, however, exceptions may be made based on the demonstration of exception natural talent at auditions and interviews. Year One First year involves students working on The Lir productions as crew, as well as hands on training and class work. This is designed to give a broad grounding in theatre skills. Through skills-based training, the course will provide students with the proficiency to take a head of department role in a theatre production in their second year. Year Two The aim of the second year of the course is to enable students to apply skills acquired in their first year to a series of theatre productions, directed and designed by professional theatre practitioners. Students will work on five productions throughout the year in a variety of roles. Two of these roles will be from the stage management options, one from technical options and the other two will be chosen in consultation with the Technical Director. In consultation with the course convenor students will also undertake a 4 to 6 week placement with a professional theatre, organisation, theatre company or practitioner. At The Lir Academy we believe that students learn best by doing. This three-year, full-time, intensive honours degree will provide each student with all the training necessary to become a professional actor through a series of skills based courses. Acting technique, voice, movement, and singing form the core subjects taught and practiced whilst classes in Dramaturgy and Text Analysis complement this learning. In order to emulate best practice of our associate drama school (RADA) the course is taught over nine semesters (three per annum) and over three years. Given the practical nature of the course, and the principal objective of training the actor’s body as an instrument as well as the creative imagination, the intensity of the training for actors means that a student can expect to be in class for approximately 35 hours per week and 36 weeks per annum. Additional commitment during production modules will also be required. Students must demonstrate deep physical, mental and emotional strengths in order become an actor. Assessment All modules in the first two years of the course are examined by continuous assessment. All modules in the final year of the course are examined both by continuous assessment and by final public performance. Mode of delivery All modules will taught through practical workshops, seminars and rehearsals. Core/elective curriculum As this is a professional training course for a very defined profession all modules are compulsory. However, within each module there are ample opportunities for individual personal development with individual tuition provided. Annual intake A minimum number of 12 and a maximum number of 16 students will be admitted each year. The Bachelor in Acting at The Lir is not part of the CAO point’s race. Public Productions In their third year, students will be cast in a range of plays (from the classical and modern repertoires) directed by professional directors, including the Artistic Director. Classes will be in the form of rehearsals for a minimum of 30 hours per week and replicate the working environment of a professional theatre. Support in terms of individual tuition on a diagnostic basis in voice and movement will be provided. Students will rehearse for four weeks, followed by a get-in period of technical and dress rehearsals, and between 7-9 public performances to which directors, agents and the general public are invited to attend. Individual feedback from the Director and the Head of Acting, Voice and Movement, or their appointees will follow in the sixth week of each term. Students will perform in 6 productions over the course of their final year (2 per semester). One of these productions will be a short film shot both on set and location that will receive a public showcase. Core Skills and Career Preparation Throughout the final year, classes will take place that will enable students to continue to practice the core skills of voice and movement to help sustain them through the rigours and demands of the production modules. Further classes to enable students to prepare for a professional working life (including the preparation of show reels, CVs, auditions etc.) will be included. Classes will expand on the Acting & Text modules of Year Two relating to professional practice (such as Acting for Screen & Microphone). Audition Showcase Towards the end of the academic year students will prepare and rehearse with a professional director a showcase of scenes from a range of dramatic texts and/or songs for public presentation before an audience of agents, artistic directors, casting directors, and producers. Applied theatre is considered to be the study of drama and theatre across a range of practical applications and non-traditional settings, including but not defined by stage performance or the study of literary texts. Contemporary theatre signals that the programme will deal largely with current and emergent modes of theatrical production and reception. This programme will seek to articulate the contemporary, varied and ever-changing roles of theatre and its practitioners in society. At its heart will be the concept of ensemble, which loosely defined, values and emphasises the importance of the practice of the collective. The idea of a working in a pro-social manner in theatre will also be core to this programme. This highlights engagement with specific sites and audiences, and with the idea that theatre has a core societal function and exists not only as entertainment. This programme will be offered in close association with the Lime Tree Theatre, which is located on the College campus, and which has hosted over 100,000 patrons since opening as a professional venue in October 2012. Through our relationship with the Lime Tree, students on the programme will be exposed to the best local, national and international practice through visiting companies, festivals, etc., and from the input of a range of visiting lecturers and practitioners. Entrance Requirements: Entry to the programme is generally by means of application via the CAO system (MI001) All applicants are required to fulfil at time of enrolment the minimum entry requirements of the University of Limerick.
