Curriculum & Philosophy Fashion is a business, and graduates are ready to begin their careers with the knowledge gained in the variety of design courses, latest Adobe and Gerber technologies that are utilized in the industry, and business courses that include Entrepreneurship, Financial Management, and Apparel Manufacturing. Upon completion of the B.F.A. in Fashion Design, graduates will Demonstrate an advanced skill level of design that meets professional standards in the fashion industry and specialized markets. Proficiently communicate their ideas through a full range of written, verbal and technological skills. Execute decisions in the fashion industry using research, critical thinking and analysis. Acquire the business acumen necessary to compete in the global world of fashion. Success Due to the enormous size of the fashion world and its related fields, many professional opportunities exist for program graduates. Career options include: accessory or apparel designer, costume designer, footwear designer, technical designer, product development manager, fashion forecaster, merchandise manager, stylist, computerized pattern drafter, import/export manager, pattern/sample maker, wardrobe manager, retail buyer, and fashion director. Alumnae are employed with companies, but not limited to Dockers Footwear, Fruit of the Loom, Olia Zavozina, Urban Outfitters, Milly NY, Dollar General, Tractor Supply, Disney Parks and Resorts, Ballet Memphis, Knights Apparel, and VF a $12 billion dollar apparel and footwear company whose divisions include Vans, Nautica, The North Face, Red Kap, Lucy and Reef. Faculty A large percentage of our instructors and professors have prior experience and continue to work in the design industry, and their knowledge of current trends and technologies is passed on to the students. Annual Fashion Show The highlight of the year is the annual student fashion show featuring selected junior and senior collections’ work. Collections are juried by the dean, faculty and professionals in the industry. Student work showcased at the fashion show is by invitation only and is based on strict judging criteria. Students also play a major role in producing the event and are involved in every detail from promotion to production. Travel Students have the opportunity to travel to New York and visit the Garment District, the center of fashion in the United States, and meet with industry leaders like Kay Unger, Elaine Gold, Greenfield Clothiers, Nanette Lepore, Saks, Inc., Paper Magazine, Theory and top costume shops for Broadway Theater.
