About Antigua and Barbuda

The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are located in the Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, and are southeast of Puerto Rico. They were settled early on by the French and Spanish, but became an English colony in 1667. In 1981 the country became an independent state in the British Commonwealth of Nations. With the tropical climate, reef-lined beaches, and rainforests, tourism dominates the economy, although it took a steep decline between 2009 and 2011. Although the islands encompass a fairly small area, there are a few opportunities to study undergraduate studies in Antigua and Barbuda.

Types of Schools Available

The islands have a state college and a couple of institutes, one for hospitality training and one for information technology. There is also a branch of the University of the West Indies located in Antigua for students who want more advanced study. Antigua and Barbuda also have a number of medical schools, which have contributed greatly to the local health care and economy.

The Academic Year

Most of the schools’ curriculums consist of two semesters every academic year. The fall semester usually starts in September and ends in December, and the spring semester starts in January and ends in May. Summer study may be available for certain programs.

Cost of Attending School in Antigua and Barbuda

The costs associated with attending undergraduate school can vary quite a bit depending on a number of factors. The school’s reputation, the particular program and its duration, and specific fees associated with the area of study can affect how much students will pay. Often, international students will be charged more than residents of the islands. It is best to contact the school of choice to find out what to expect financially.

Program Duration

The length of the program will depend greatly on the type of degree that is being pursued. Some programs may take only two years to complete while others, such as a medical degree, can take eight years or more. Most bachelor degrees take an average of three to five years to complete.
